Another kitchen transformation;
This mid 1980’s house is a steel framed home. Light weight steel was used for the ceilings and walls. During demo, while removing fur-downs which turned out to be supporting the ceiling one side collapsed and sagged down.
We went into it blind, removing the loose cellulose insulation was not part of the kitchen remodel so we were not aware of precisely how the ceiling was constructed. Generally fur-downs are not structural and do not support the ceiling joists. That was not the case on this project.
The side that collapsed also supported the HVAC equipment that was located in the attic space over the dining area. We quickly removed the AC, engineered a total rebuild for the ceiling, spray foamed the entire attic space, re-wired everything above the ceiling, installed a new structural platform for the AC equipment, and did it all in under two weeks.
