- Check washing machine hoses every 6 months.

They crack and grow brittle over time which causes water leaks and actually costs you more on utility bills and could lead to mold !

FYI : rubber washing machine hoses are the #1 cause of floods in houses according to the National Flood Insurance Institute. Installing stainless steel braided washing machine hoses can help protect your home !

**Check Your Hose Bibs in the Spring

Check out the faucet for leaks – this is especially common in colder climates . If the water supply pipe has frozen, that once frozen pipe can be expanded and may have cracked. This pipe will leak and should be replaced as soon as possible .

Random Plumbing Tip :

- Don’t overload vanities and sink cabinets.
When you crowd stuff into your cabinets, you can jostle water supply lines and drains, loosening connections and causing plumbing leaks.
If drips occur, they’re tough to spot amid piles of cleaners and spare toilet paper

Some Holiday Plumbing Tips :

Try to avoid pouring fats and oils down your kitchen drain. Fats or oils solidify and cause clogs in your pipes. You can use paper towels to wipe the grease out of your pans when it hardens and then place it in the trash. You can also use a grease can before the grease solidifies.

Try not to put fibrous foods in your garbage disposal. Some fibrous foods that can damage your garbage disposal are chicken skins, potato peels, celery, and particular fruit.

Make sure to run water before and after you run the garbage disposal.

Put plungers in each of your bathrooms before the holidays.

If you have a tank water heater, spread out shower times so that everyone gets an equal amount of time for hot water.

Only flush toilet paper and waste down the toilet. Everything else should go into a trash can. Even the items that say they are “flushable” should still go into the trash, so they don’t clog your plumbing.

Be sure to keep a screen on your bathroom sinks so that you can make sure the least amount of hair gets into your drains.

Happy Holidays,

Do you ever think about Cleaning your garbage disposal ?

Here are some ways to clean a garbage disposal :

Lemon
The acidic properties of lemon can eat away at stains, grime, and grease. It can also neutralize odors.

Citrus peels
Drop a few lemon or orange peels into the disposal and turn it on to temporarily mask odors

Splash guard
Clean the rubber shield at the top of the disposal with baking soda, washing up liquid, or put it in the dishwasher

Know how to spot and resolve small plumbing problems before they become major issues at home.

Help your plumbing stay dry and happy with these tips:

Keep an eye out for trouble:
When it comes to plumbing, little leaks can lead to big problems. Be alert to signs of impending plumbing failures: Leaking faucets, damp cabinets or rocking toilets all signal problems that need prompt attention.

Repair problems early:
A leaking faucet isn't just annoying, the moisture it releases puts wear on sink fixtures and can encourage the growth of mold and mildew. Stay on top of problems to keep the household clean and dry.

Know where to go when trouble happens:
Should plumbing fail, will you know how to stop the flood?
Locate the main shut-off valve for the home water supply.
If it's in a dark, hidden, or hard-to-reach place, gather any tools you'll need for a quick shut-off, and store them nearby.
There's nothing like the frustration of a missing flashlight or a misplaced shut-off key when water's pouring down the stairs from a broken pipe.

Shutting off appliances:
Similarly, know how to shut off water to sinks, toilets, washing machines and water-using appliances like the refrigerator's icemaker.
Should they misbehave, knowing the location of the shut-off valve will save the day and a lot of wet cleanup.
