We did a nifty little facade restoration at 1109 Caroline Street. We had to replace the entire storefront frame and glass due to missing and broken components. We used polished black granite to replace the missing pigmented structural glass panels and were able to restore the transom windows. Much thanks to the owner for her willingness and interest in getting it right. An all around great effort by Habalis Project Manager Emily Dudenhefer! She took this project from concept to completion including design, Architectural Review Board compliance and dealing with that pesky and unsightly gas meter! Looks like a lovely children's clothing store has moved into the space. Give them a visit next time you are grabbing a bite at Eileen's!

Chris has done it again! Today he was presented with the 2026 Historic Fredericksburg Foundation Incorporated (HFFI) Craftsmanship Award. Chris was given this award for the restoration work he did to the circa 1749 Lewis Store which serves as the headquarters of HFFI. Much thanks to HFFI for having us work on their antique Aquia sandstone quoins and much thanks to Chris for doing an award worthy job.

Super proud to share that our masonry division leader Chris Witman has earned his Project Management Professional (PMP) designation. Chris is constantly seeking to bring new skills to the table in his position. Although Chris is already well versed in managing large complex projects this will give him some additional techniques to really bring them home on time and on budget. We really appreciate the leadership that Chris brings to this growing division of our historic preservation company!

Chris and our masonry team are really doing some cool work at the historic Lewis Store. We are restoring the spalling sandstone quoins and one is in need of replacement. We have a collection of reclaimed sandstone and Chris was able to find one just barely big enough to cut a quoin. the rest of the quoins are being restored with Jahn repair matrix.

We are honored to be helping restore this important building. I studied the Aquia sandstone quoins on this building with Brown Morton at UMW over 20 years ago. I can remember him stating that sedimentary stone should always be laid in the same orientation that it was created. Sandstone will still weather when laid correctly but can spall badly when laid perpendicular to the bedding plane.

The City of Fredericksburg congratulates the Historic Fredericksburg Foundation, Inc. (HFFI) on receiving a significant preservation grant. HFFI has been awarded $118,000 from the Commonwealth’s VA250 Preservation Fund to support the restoration of the exterior of the 1749 Lewis Store - originally a mercantile shop owned by Revolutionary War supporter and arms supplier Fielding Lewis. Along with his wife, Betty Washington Lewis, the couple played a significant role in the war effort, with their ships delivering essential goods and ammunition to Colonial troops.

Donated to HFFI nearly 30 years ago by Robert and Mary Ellen Wheeler and restored between 2000 and 2007, the Lewis Store is an early and unique example of Georgian-style commercial retail architecture and a symbol of Fredericksburg’s Revolutionary history. This grant will assist in repairing deteriorated brickwork and decorative sandstone, as well as replacing the aging wood-shingle roof.

We teamed up with one of our favorite collaborators, Fredericksburg Painting Service to paint the Confederate Cemetery main gate. They did an awesome job. Our masonry division has done several restoration projects inside both the Confederate Cemetery and the adjacent City Cemetery. It is always an honor to work in this beautiful historic space.
