Success! Invasive plant treatment is an important part of managing State Forests. This photo shows the dead stems of invasive non-native Japanese barberry that was treated last year. Underneath, young oak seedlings emerged because they had the sunlight needed to grow. To help these sun-loving seedlings flourish, a few nearby trees have also been marked for removal. Eventually, a new diverse forest with young red oaks will be part of this landscape.

Removing invasive plants in our forests provides growing space and sunlight for native species to thrive. Young oak forests are rare, and if we want oaks in the future, we must provide conditions for acorns to germinate and grow into trees.
