BEFORE YOU HEAD HOME!
Wait for officials to say it's safe to return.
Stay far away from downed power lines, poles and wires. Assume every wire is live.
Don't drive through flooded roads. Just 12 inches of moving water can float a car.
Check on your neighbors. We're with you, Panhandle.

The deadliest part of a hurricane isn't always the wind. It's the water.

As Hurricane Isaias approaches the northern Gulf Coast, the National Hurricane Center is warning of potentially life-threatening storm surge reaching 5 to 7 feet in some coastal communities.

And the map below shows exactly which stretches of coastline are under storm surge warnings.

Historically, storm surge has been responsible for nearly half of all direct hurricane-related deaths in the United States. It's one of the most dangerous threats a hurricane can bring, regardless of its category.

Storm surge happens when powerful winds push seawater inland, flooding streets, neighborhoods and homes. And with large waves riding on top of those elevated water levels, conditions can become devastating.

Here's what makes this especially dangerous: you don't need a Category 4 or 5 hurricane to experience catastrophic flooding.

If you're in one of the warned areas shown on NOAA's map, take this seriously. Know your evacuation zone, follow local emergency officials and never attempt to drive through floodwaters.

The wind may determine a hurricane's category.

But the water can determine its deadliest consequences.

Hurricane Isaias is getting stronger, and the Florida Panhandle is running out of time to prepare.

Moving over the Gulf's exceptionally warm waters, Isaias has intensified and developed a more defined eye. The storm is currently forecast to make landfall as a Category 2 hurricane, but that's only part of the story.

A Category 2 hurricane with 105 mph winds and a Category 3 with 115 mph winds aren't dramatically different in terms of the dangerous conditions they can produce.

That's why we always encourage Floridians to prepare for a storm stronger than what's currently forecast.

Here's what communities along the northern Gulf Coast could be facing:

Storm surge reaching up to 7 feet, particularly near and east of landfall

Damaging hurricane-force winds extending 30 miles from the center

Heavy rainfall capable of producing significant flooding

The possibility of isolated tornadoes

And remember, hurricane categories only measure wind speed. They don't account for storm surge, rainfall or flooding.

For our friends in the Panhandle, prepare for the conditions, not just the category.

We'll be following Isaias closely and sharing updates throughout the day.

Hurricane conditions are expected in our Panhandle communities tonight. Please take these steps now:
- Shelter in an interior room away from windows and doors.
- If you're in a surge zone, move to higher ground before water rises.
- Never walk, swim or drive through floodwater. Turn around, don't drown.
- Follow your county emergency managers and the National Hurricane Center.

For 30 years, we've lived through these storms with our Florida neighbors. We're thinking of you tonight. Be safe.
