Frick Concrete LLC – Winter Work Update ❄️

Cold and wet weather doesn’t stop us —
but it does change what we pour.

Certain residential projects like patios and driveways just aren’t meant to be done when temperatures swing and ground conditions stay saturated. Rushing those jobs can lead to discoloration, surface issues, and unnecessary mess around your home.

That’s not how we operate.

Instead, we shift focus to projects that make sense in these conditions — foundations, slabs, and commercial work that can be properly protected and done right.

Here are a few jobs we’ve completed recently despite the cold and wet stretch. Built right. On schedule. No shortcuts.

When the weather turns consistent, we’ll be ready for patios and driveways — and spring is already filling up.

If you’re planning a project, now is the time to get on the schedule.

🧱 Wire Mesh vs. 1/2” Rebar — What Are You Actually Getting?

Concrete will crack. That’s normal.

The real question is:
How well does the slab hold together after it cracks?

There are two common reinforcement options in residential concrete:

🔹 6x6 Wire Mesh

• Thin welded steel grid
• Lower material cost
• Faster to install
• Primarily helps control small shrinkage cracks

Wire mesh is often chosen because it’s the more economical route. It gives the slab basic crack control, but it adds very little structural integrity under load.

It does not significantly increase the slab’s ability to bridge weight, resist settlement, or handle heavy stress over time.

🔹 #4 (1/2”) Rebar Spaced 2’ On Center

• Solid 1/2” steel bars
• Significantly stronger structurally
• Better load distribution
• Greater resistance to movement and settlement

Rebar reinforces the slab so it behaves more like one structural unit when weight is applied.

It doesn’t prevent cracks —
but it helps the concrete continue performing when they occur.

💡 The difference comes down to long-term performance.

Mesh is typically used to reduce cost.

Rebar is used to increase structural durability.

If you’re comparing bids, ask:

• What reinforcement is included?
• Is it supported properly in the slab?
• What PSI mix is being used?

You won’t see what’s inside after it’s poured —
but that’s what determines how it performs 10–20 years from now.

🧱 Type I vs. Type IL Cement — What Changed?

If you had concrete poured years ago, it was most likely made with traditional Type I Portland cement.

Today, most ready-mix plants supply Type IL (Portland Limestone Cement).

In fact, many local plants have fully shifted production to Type IL — meaning that is the primary (and often only) cement blend they now ship in ready-mix trucks.

Here’s the difference:

🔹 Type I (Traditional Portland Cement)
• Higher clinker content
• Long-standing industry standard
• More energy-intensive to produce

🔹 Type IL (Portland Limestone Cement)
• 5–15% clinker replaced with finely ground limestone
• Lower energy required during manufacturing
• Reduced carbon footprint
• Meets ASTM strength requirements

Clinker is the most energy-intensive and costly part of cement production. Reducing clinker lowers manufacturing energy use and emissions at the plant level.

Concrete remains the second most consumed material in the world after water. As environmental standards and production methods evolve, cement blends evolve as well.

Type IL is now widely used across the country and meets required performance standards.

As a homeowner, it’s okay to ask questions like:

• What PSI mix is being used?
• What reinforcement is included?
• What standards are being followed?

Understanding what goes into your concrete helps you make an informed decision.

At Frick Concrete LLC, we believe customers should know what they’re paying for.

Because concrete isn’t something you want to redo twice.
