We recently assembled this charming chubby-legged Yardistry gazebo from Costco for a local family, and we can’t help mentioning how much we enjoy working with cedar. It looks beautiful, smells amazing, and is simply a pleasure to work with.

Welcome to the underworld of a deck we once built for an amazing family in Manayunk.

We know not everyone will immediately understand what they're looking at in these photos 😊 But those who do might enjoy the view: properly sized pressure-treated framing, hot-dip galvanized structural hardware, carefully placed blocking, protected joists, solid connections, and quite a few details that will eventually disappear beneath the finished deck.

Moses puts just as much thought into this part of a project as we do into everything that will remain visible. Structural loads and connections are carefully considered during the design process, not figured out as we go. By the time the inspector gets to see the framing, we're happy to show exactly what's underneath.

Because, as some wise guy once said, beautiful decking, railings, and lights are only as good as the structure supporting them.

This smaller deck came with an interesting design challenge: the backyard had limited space, so the stairs needed to take up as little of it as possible. At the same time, a straight flight of stairs didn't feel comfortable for one member of the family, and having a landing between the two flights was important to them.

After going back and forth on several different layouts, this is what we designed together with the homeowner: a compact two-flight staircase with a landing, carefully fitted into the available space without taking over the backyard.

A staircase isn't something we simply attach to a finished deck. Its layout, proportions and relationship to the rest of the yard are part of the design from the beginning.

Your deck lights don’t all have to follow the same schedule.

The lighting systems we install can be set up around the way you actually use your outdoor space.

Lights can come on automatically at dusk and turn off at dawn, follow a specific schedule, or be divided into separate zones with different settings.

For example, your post lights could turn on before you get home from work, while the recessed lights built into the decking come on at dusk, creating a warm, welcoming ambience as daylight disappears.

The system doesn’t decide how your deck works. You do 😉

A deck can look just as beautiful after the sun goes down 😍

For this project, we installed a low-voltage lighting system with post cap lights, recessed perimeter lights, and riser lights.

Deck lighting can be incorporated into a brand-new deck or added as an upgrade to an existing deck, even if we weren't the team that originally built it.

It’s so exciting when we suggest a design idea and our client sees exactly what we see in it 😍

For this project, we all loved the idea of using multi-width Deckorators Voyage decking in Tundra, paired with a triple picture frame. The different board widths give such a large deck more character and movement, while the picture frame brings everything together into a clean, intentional design.

Multi-width layouts and detailed picture framing take more planning (and quite a few more cuts 🥲), but we think the finished result speaks for itself.

One of our recent deck projects gave us the perfect opportunity to install our first Hideaway privacy screens, and we're genuinely impressed.

Our client was originally inspired by another manufacturer's privacy panels, but once we learned those were made from plastic, we suggested taking a look at Hideaway instead.

From the moment we opened the boxes, it was obvious these panels were built with care. Every hole lined up perfectly, the powder coating was flawless, and the laser-cut pattern was incredibly clean.

The pattern our client chose looked even better in person than in the catalog. It creates just the right amount of privacy for their future outdoor dining area without making the space feel closed off from the rest of the yard.

Another feature we thought was really clever is that Hideaway rates each pattern by its privacy level, all the way up to 100% privacy (which is essentially a solid aluminum panel). That's a pretty thoughtful way to help homeowners find the balance they're looking for... whether they want a little privacy or enough to satisfy the most dedicated introvert 😁

We'll definitely keep recommending Hideaway to our future clients. The panels look fantastic, feel incredibly solid, and we have every reason to believe they'll still be doing their job decades from now.

Projects like this are never completed by one company alone, and we're grateful to work alongside people who genuinely care about what they do.

A big thank you to Bin There Dump That. Steve was always quick to answer our questions, and Darnell skillfully navigated a steep driveway while delivering and picking up the dumpster. They were both a pleasure to work with.

If you're renting a dumpster, they're definitely worth considering. Just be sure to check their list of accepted materials beforehand, as certain items aren't accepted.

Another thank you goes to Maribel at the Lowe's Pro Desk located in Bensalem. She helped us stay on schedule by making sure our materials arrived when we needed them, answered countless questions, and contacted Deckorators on our behalf several times throughout the project. Having someone knowledgeable and responsive on your side makes a huge difference when you're managing a large build.

We're already looking forward to the next big project where we'll get to work with these great people again.
