🏠 ROOF REPAIR: NEW SHINGLES vs. OLD SHINGLES
The answer is simple: new shingles are new — the shingles already on your roof have been exposed to years of weather and sunlight.
☀️ Your existing shingles have aged.
Over time, UV rays, rain, heat, cold, pollen, algae, and normal weather exposure can change the appearance of your shingles. They may fade, darken, lose granules, or simply weather differently than they looked when they were first installed.
🆕 Replacement shingles haven’t weathered yet.
Even when we use the same manufacturer, color, and shingle line, a brand-new shingle may look noticeably different next to a shingle that’s been on your home for several years or decades.
There can also be differences between manufacturing batches, and some older shingles or colors may have been changed or discontinued altogether. In those situations, the closest available match may be the best option.
A perfect cosmetic match cannot always be guaranteed.
Sometimes the new shingles will blend in better as they weather. Other times, especially on an older or heavily faded roof, some color difference may remain.
Think of it like replacing one section of older flooring or touching up an exterior paint color that’s been in the sun for years — new material simply hasn’t experienced the same aging as the original material.
A roof repair is primarily intended to correct the roofing issue and restore the function of that area of the roof. We always want the finished repair to look as good as possible, but a repair to an aged roof may still be visible from the ground.
✅ Same color doesn’t always mean an exact visual match
✅ New shingles may appear darker, brighter, or more vibrant
✅ Older shingles naturally change in appearance over time
✅ Discontinued products may require the closest available match
✅ A visible repair does not necessarily mean the repair was done incorrectly
A quality repair should keep your home protected and address the problem properly — but when you’re combining new materials with years-old materials, some cosmetic differences are completely normal.
