North Coast Community Garden Collaborative NCCGC is a network of community gardeners that share knowledge, seeds, tools and plants RCAA also provides fiscal sponsorship to the Garden Collaborative.

Mission:
We strive to improve people’s access to healthier lifestyle choices, particularly access to nutritious, locally-grown, and culturally appropriate foods, by creating and nurturing partnerships of community garden groups and their supporters in California’s North Coast region. Vision:
We envision a thriving network of interconnected autonomous gardens actively supported by communities of California’s North Coast region. The North Coast Community Garden Collaborative (“Garden Collaborative”) formed in the spring of 2009 when managers of several community gardens came together to see how we might assist each other. We envisioned creating a network of autonomous community gardens and supportive residents who could share resources, like tools, seeds, ideas, experiences, and people power. As more and more community members and partners got on board, the Garden Collaborative grew rapidly in its first year, starting 8 new gardens and linking up with over a dozen more. The Garden Collaborative currently is based in Eureka, CA and we work primarily with community gardens in Humboldt County, with growing interest from Del Norte and Trinity counties. There are many definitions used for community gardens; our focus is on communal spaces that are dedicated to non-commercial, community-based agricultural production. Community gardens are pieces of land set aside for community members to grow food for themselves, their families, and their communities. Community gardens include neighborhood gardens, gardens which grow food for food distribution centers, and school gardens. We are headed by a Steering Committee and are primarily a volunteer-based organization. We have two part-time staff members, through the Redwood Community Action Agency (RCAA), funded by the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services CalFresh Outreach Program. For more information about the North Coast Community Garden Collaborative please call (707) 269-2071! We also offer assistance with CalFresh! CalFresh (formerly Food Stamps) can be used to purchase seeds and starts for your garden. Market Match is also available at select Farmer's Markets. Contact us for more information.

For our last Garden Gathering of the season, you are invited to Rainshine Permaculture Homestead & Nursery!

Come on by Oct. 11 to check out how Marlon Gil (with the help of the Humboldt Permaculture Guild and its members!) turned this small piece of land into a modern day food forest over the last 15 years.

Previously a historical homestead on 3/4 of an acre that had been severely neglected for many years, Rainshine Permaculture is now a thriving permaculture paradise. Today, they grow a large variety of climate appropriate edible plants, many of which you can find (along with surplus fruit) at their stand at the Arcata Farmer’s Market, as well as raising free range egg-laying hens.

In addition to growing food, this inspiring homestead is open to the public and is used to host a variety of educational lectures, tours and workshops throughout the year, including our final Garden Gathering!

Don’t miss this opportunity to see Permaculture in practice!

This year's U-Pick Flower season has been pure magic! Thank you to everyone who came out and supported our little farm project at Freshwater Farms Reserve. Your donations help keep our non-profit farm running during federal budget cuts to our programming. Many of the U-Pickers let us know that this was the highlight of their summer or was just what they needed. We are so inspired and plan to make the U-Pick bigger and better next year!

Our last U-pick is Wednesday September 30th from 2-6pm. Flowers are limited so get here early.

Love Farmer Matt and the RCAA Garden Team

Volunteer Day at Redwood Roots Farm this Friday, September 18th, 1-4 PM!

Come by anytime in that window and join us for some projects in the field!

What to bring: please come prepared with closed toed shoes, weather protection, a snack if needed, a water bottle, and long sleeves (some of our weeds are pokey and stinging nettle is about).

Invite your friends and family but please leave non-service animals at home!

No experience necessary. We will have all the gloves and tools needed, but if you have your own that you prefer, feel free to bring them.

Accessibility: Please park in the designated area of the Unitarian parking lot and walk down the driveway to the farm. If you need accessible parking, there are limited spaces at the farm itself. Please note that the ground is highly uneven around the farm and may be difficult for to traverse for some. We will be doing a combination of sitting, kneeling, and standing activities.

Exchange: We’ll send you home with flowers, produce, and so much gratitude for your help!
