David has always loved Encinitas and spent years enjoying the community before moving his family here 13 years ago. Raising his four children in this incredible coastal town has been a dream come true for his family ❤️

For the past 23 years, David has operated gelato and coffee shops in both San Diego and Seattle ☕, but his favorite location is undoubtedly Gelato 101—his hometown spot right beneath the iconic Encinitas sign on the 101! Seven years ago, he brought his passion for authentic gelato and coffee into the very community he calls home, creating a welcoming space that quickly connected with locals and visitors alike 🤝

What makes Gelato 101 especially meaningful is that it’s truly a family business. His wife and children all work alongside him, serving friends, neighbors, and the greater community every day. For the Arato family, it’s much more than a business—it’s a genuine community experience they deeply enjoy being part of 🙌

Fun fact 🌊🏄 After a surf session at D Street, David’s go-to lunch spot is Garden 🍔🍺 He grabs his coffee Italian-style at his own shop ☕ paired with a croissant from Brothers 🥐 for breakfast, and when it’s time for a nice dinner downtown, you’ll likely find him at Herb & Sea enjoying their happy hour.

Sunday, May 17, Coast Highway 101 belongs to YOU!

The City of Encinitas is excited to announce Cyclovia Encinitas — a free, car-free celebration where downtown comes alive with bikes, walkers, rollers, and all things people-powered!

Visit Encinitas and the Encinitas Historical Society will launch a new free public art walking tour series during this year’s event.

The guided tours will highlight Encinitas’ extensive collection of public artwork, which organizers say includes more than 900 pieces spanning murals, mosaics, sculptures and surf-inspired installations throughout the city.

The tours will be led by local historian and Encinitas Historical Society archivist Hillel Schwartz and longtime Encinitas resident Mark O’Connor, both avid cyclists. Participants can sign up at the Visit Encinitas and Historical Society booths located between D and E streets along Coast Highway 101.

The walking tours lasting approximately 30 to 40 minutes are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. Extended one-hour tours are scheduled for 10:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

From D Street to I Street, the road is yours to explore. Enjoy:

Introducing our newest featured artist Kennan Loesch! This one is extra special because she if part of the Encinitas 101 family 😁 When she isn’t doing art, she helps coordinate all the downtown Encinitas community events that we love so much! Her original artwork and prints are available for viewing and purchase at our Encinitas 101 Gallery (818 S Coast Hwy) from May 1-July 1. 🔲

Please join us on Thursday, May 28 at 5:30pm for her opening reception. We will have light bites, refreshments, and a DJ set by beats by Kuomatose. 🎶🍷

About the artist:

Kennan graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Merchandise Management and Marketing. Her passion for art led her to study abroad at Accademia Italiana in Florence, Italy, where she studied different mediums of art. 🖼️

Art has always been Kennan’s creative outlet. While she started creating large-scale pieces just for fun, they have recently turned into more than just a hobby. Kennan just had her first group exhibition at SH!FT Gallery in Ocean Beach in April, and is now thrilled to have her first solo show right here in her hometown of Encinitas! 🥂

She typically works with black paper and white ink, a style she found in 2021. She practices automatism, creating art without conscious thought. It accesses material from the unconscious mind, often resulting in surrealist, abstract art. Her art is a continuous flow, with no pre-planning. Every piece follows this same process, yet each is unique. 🌟

When she’s not drawing, Kennan enjoys trying new restaurants, going to the movies, and vintage shopping. 🍿
