Set on the historic grounds of the original home of Rosell Hough—the namesake of Roselle, Illinois—this project represents a transition from a traditional landscape to a vibrant, ecologically functional Native Garden. Following an initial installation by a previous firm, the client sought a fresh vision that felt more organic, intentional, and sustainable.

Green Guerrilla’s design prioritizes the repurposing of existing vegetation and hardscape elements, integrating them into a multi-layered native ecosystem that provides continuous seasonal interest and vital support for local pollinators.

We’re revitalizing the space beneath a mature red maple with rich, STA-certified compost to nurture healthy soil and lasting growth.

A striking rain garden, framed by natural Lannon stone, will capture downspout runoff before it reaches the street—helping reduce pollution and protect local waterways. 💧

Featuring native gems like Blue Bottle Gentian and Cardinal Flower, this design creates a vibrant “pollinator pit-stop” for bumblebees and hummingbirds right in the heart of the neighborhood. 🐝✨

With Christmas Fern and Wild Geranium adding structure and color year-round, this landscape proves that sustainable “wildness” can be both intentional and stunning. 🌸

Since 2019, Green Guerrilla has been the official grounds maintenance contractor for the Elgin Math and Science Charter School (EMSA) and its historic 19-acre campus in Elgin, Illinois.

Our work focuses on sustainable land management but also extends to security and building maintenance. The EMSA campus is located on an oak-crowned bluff overlooking the Forested Fen (an Illinois State Nature Preserve) and features three 1930s Prairie School buildings designed by noted Chicagoland architect John Van Bergen, a direct protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright.

I have worked closely with EMSA, including volunteering 5 years on the school's Environmental Committee and 2 years participating in Friday Field Studies (an afterschool environmental education program led by Friends of the Fox River). Cultivating a strong professional rapport allowed us to implement an effective sustainable land management plan that aligns with the school's vision. Green Guerrilla’s sustainable work on the campus includes , , applications of different types of and Zones and .

For turf maintenance, we use no herbicides and synthetic fertilizers and all our commercial mowers and landscape power equipment use zero gasoline, significantly lowering ground-level emissions and noise pollution for the K-8 school campus and its natural environment.

Green Guerrilla has supported EMSA through its expansion from K-4 to a full K–8 charter program, including the renovation of its historic buildings (led by Wheeler Kearns Architects and Bulley & Andrews). We worked closely with the school, construction, and engineering teams to design and install the sustainable landscapes for each newly renovated school building. (P.S. EMSA received an Illinois Honor Award in 2023 for the building renovations!)

This past weekend, I snapped some Autumn pictures of the sustainable landscape features we have created with EMSA. I’ll spend the next couple of weeks highlighting these different features, discussing the design intent, functionality, and the positive impact they have on our community. Stay tuned!
