Yesterday I was reviewing a report and noticed something next to the front door...a simple peace sign.

Nothing fancy. Just a small reminder that someone wants their home to feel peaceful.

And it got me thinking...

Most of the calls we get at SMS Environmental start when that peace has already been disrupted.

A pipe bursts. Mold is discovered. An asbestos concern pops up. A strange odor shows up out of nowhere.

People don't call us because they want environmental testing.

They call because they want answers.

They want to know if the building is safe, if the remediation worked, and if they can move forward with confidence.

That's why I've always believed our job is about more than collecting samples and writing reports. It's about providing clarity when people need it most.

One thing we focus on in every inspection report is documentation.

Good photos matter.

Not because they make a report look better — but because they help tell the story behind the findings. Thermal imaging, moisture readings, surface sampling, humidity levels… when you can visually connect the data to what’s happening, it gives clients clarity and confidence in the process.

Anyone can make claims.

A professional inspection should be able to show you exactly what supports the conclusions.

That’s why we document everything as thoroughly as possible.

One thing I’ve always believed is that how we treat people matters just as much as the work itself.

… 15 years ago!

Who knew I’d end up working with him at South River Restoration… And then at this “new” SMS venture.

My mom surely never saw it coming based on the way we tormented each other growing up.

My niece is graduating high school Magna Cum Laude 🎓 and apparently thinks entrepreneurship looks fun because of her uncle… and maybe her dad too! 😂

Clearly she hasn’t seen the stress-eating, random 3 AM thoughts, or talking to yourself in the car after a long day yet.

But honestly, seeing the next generation dream big and want something of their own is pretty awesome.

Congrats to all the grads out there… especially the future business owners crazy enough to bet on themselves.

Bryan is headed to court today as an expert witness representing one of our property management clients in a case involving water intrusion and mold-related damage.

Truthfully, he’d rather be out in the field doing inspections and testing...that’s the part of the job he enjoy most. But as environmental consultants, sometimes our work extends beyond the inspection itself.

Plus...he gets to wear a suit!
