My good friend Brandon Wilczynski had a beautiful concrete pad poured this spring and wants to turn it into a relaxing outdoor space for friends and family to grill, have fun and relax. I’ll be turning his very unorthodox looking foundation into a beautiful stacked stone wall covering the length of the foundation.

First there is extensive “remodeling” I should say… as to fix, rebuild and transform this multi-material foundation into a plumb and acceptable wall to apply the stone to. This will be a great transformation process throughout the build to see how to get stone on this wall and to maintain a strong foundation on the edge of his house.

A tenant in this Buffalo house was unable to navigate their stairs successfully, so here we are demoing and rebuilding them for the homeowner.

I was able to tackle laying this block today for my friend Mark J Warsaw who owns Crete Construction by Design LLC after he and his crew removed all of the old masonry from this deteriorating concrete and block entranceway. I loaded the cells with rebar, drilled 4 horizontal holes to install rebar into the foundation on multiple courses to maintain a strong hold to the existing foundation and grouted all block cells. Mark will come in now to form and pour the stairs and landing area and then this job is wrapped up.

Completed repointing along with a partial rebuild of this poolside stone wall this week. This wall is only a few years old but showed an unusual amount of weathered erosion creating mortar joint failure and stones to loosen. I went with a polymer blended veneer mortar mix to re-set all stones and a veneer mortar with an acrylic bonding agent to grout all of the joints with a new “Dark Tan” color dye. This mortar color really matches the stones quite well and created definition in all of the different elaborate stone colors, and renewed this wall for the homeowners like new.

This restoration was a tremendous challenge to bring this fireplace back to life. This job entailed an enormous amount of patience and manual labor to complete with no access to power, everything was done by hand the old school way including breaking and chiseling the stones.
Located in a wooded area, this fireplace was the remnants of a cabin that the owners of the property wanted to convert into a patio with the fireplace as the centerpiece.
I removed all of the old brick from where you can tell the roofline used to be, completely tore out and rebuilt the firebox with new firebrick, demo’d roughly 1/3 of the stone on the chimney and then rebuilt the fireplace and chimney stack with new stone that I quarried from the river down below on the customers property. Notice the large capstones I installed at the top of the chimney as well. An incredibly difficult job to pull off without sacrificing the integrity of the fireplace, but it turned out amazing once completed. The owners of the property then had a large gazebo built around the fireplace to create a nice relaxing atmosphere on their wooded property.

One of the most rewarding jobs I have done to date.

Next on the list is some stonework on this beautiful decorative stone wall in Cheektowaga. A portion of this stone will have to be taken down, cleaned and rebuilt with specialized polymer modified veneer mortar. Along with repointing the entire wall due to mortar joints cracking, the stones have been displaced due to water penetrating in behind the stonework most likely due to our freeze/thaw cycle here in WNY.

Here is a closer look at the short garden wall I installed. I used 4” block reinforced with rebar and fully grouted and additional weep holes to allow drainage and inhibit water build up along the wall that will soon be backfilled by the customer. The sidewall porch photos are taken once all of the old mortar was ground out and I also took a wire wheel with my grinder to remove a lot of old paint and smudged mortar on the wall as well.

Returning customer who I did some foundation work a few years ago has always wanted a change and restoration to the front of their house. I demo’d the brick side walls to the failing stairs. Did a partial rebuild on the columns and repointed the entire front brick area with a matching dark mortar. I also laid down some new concrete adjacent to the new front steps and added a small retaining wall including drainage and a limestone cap to add an accent to their garden.

Finalized restoring this chimney today and it turned out great. The customer loved the new mortar color. I got rid of the chimney flue and removed the liner that is no longer in use and re-surfaced the exposed concrete on top of the cap. I cut in a drip edge along the underside of the cap overhang to inhibit any water from returning down the face of the chimney in the future.

While composite decking is being installed on another restoration job in South Buffalo, I started restoring this chimney in Eden. The brick is in great shape; however, the concrete cap had eventually failed and cracked causing water to enter the chimney and start damaging the brick and mortar joints.

Started re-pointing the chimney with a southwestern Stucco pigment to align with the multicolored brick.
