On this day in 1889, it was completed. Yet, the iconic structure we all know was nearly demolished.

The Eiffel Tower—built in just 2 years, 2 months, and 5 days for the Exposition Universelle (1889), marking 100 years since the French Revolution.

But the iconic structure was nearly torn down.

By 1909, demolition was the plan.

What changed?
It worked with the weather, not against it.

Its height made it essential for meteorology and radio transmission, helping scientists better understand wind, air pressure, and atmospheric behavior.

And that changed everything.

Because when a structure proves it can handle its environment—
you don’t tear it down. You keep it.

That idea still holds.

It’s National Retro Day.

And in Minnesota… this is sacred ground.

Wood paneling.
Red s**g.
Neon glowing like it’s still 1978.
A Northern that’s seen things.
