Carpenters battling the division of labor

We feel very fortunate to be working with on this beautiful 1907 home in Trinity Park. Long neglected by previous owners, Sheila is bringing this house back its stunning former glory.

This photo is from what will be an attic apartment. The dormer was inadequately supported and had deflected the ceiling joists by 3 1/2” in the center. We rebuilt the floor system and properly secured the dormer. Soon, we will be restoring the stained glass casement window.

Stuff like this warms my cold, dead heart. Demetrio showing how a framing square works to layout rafters. I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way.

I’m not sure it’s really a side hustle if it’s actually my job, but we do run custom trim for other local contractors. Anyone who wants to match existing millwork in their old home is our kind of person. This casing is headed to our friends at Revel Construction for a home in Old North Durham they’re renovating.

Sometimes, when you just want to dig a foundation for a small screen porch, you find the biggest buried oil tank in human history.

When we’re not building cool stuff, we’re tearing apart old stuff. As part of rewiring this 1907 beauty, our electrician needed access to the ceiling framing in this foyer. Demetrio and did a nice job prepping for a literal ton of dust and have just about wrapped up the tear out.

Cabinets aren’t all we do, but they they sure are nice to photograph. This is a media cabinet we did from early last year. We custom milled the wide beadboard for the back.

Closing the year on a high note with these pretty simple built-ins framing the entry to a living room in Morrisville, NC. and Demetrio did a great job milling these in the shop and assembling onsite.

Electric lighting wasn’t immediately embraced when it was introduced in the early 20th century. Instead, gas lines were run to interior lights and ran off what was called “town gas” at the time, now known as natural gas. I love finding these old gas lines run through houses. This ca. 1907 house had gas and k**b and tube wiring installed to each original fixture.

One of the hardest parts of owning a small business is saying goodbye to good employees. Adam and Kyli have been a joy to work and see grow as tradespeople. They’ve weathered tough days in construction, the bumps and bruises, the summer heat, the cold rain, Molly the Mold, the worst clients we’ve ever had in ‘24 (and it’s not close), the difficulty of learning new skills, and they still showed up ready to go. They’ll be missed tremendously, but we look forward to hearing about their next adventures in NY.
