As all this snow starts melting, we’re getting a lot of calls about wet basements and water coming through foundation walls.
Even though it’s the middle of winter, these random high temperatures we’re getting in January are already causing problems — and they will continue to get worse in the spring when everything thaws again.
Here’s the truth — water always follows the path of least resistance.
If your home doesn’t have a proper perimeter drain system or properly extended gutter downspouts, that water has nowhere to go… so it starts looking for cracks, seams, old mortar joints, and tiny crevices to push its way inside.
This is especially common in older New England homes where foundations are made of brick, fieldstone, or boulders that were never sealed on the outside. Once that soil around your foundation becomes saturated, your basement basically turns into a bowl holding water — and pressure forces moisture straight through the walls and floor.
When we install perimeter drains, we also apply a heavy-duty rubber membrane around the outside of your foundation.
This membrane acts as a waterproof barrier that keeps moisture from ever touching your foundation walls, while the drain system safely carries that water away from your home.
A perimeter drain, rubber waterproofing membrane, and properly directed downspouts give water a place to go before it becomes your problem.
No mold.
No soaked insulation.
No ruined belongings.
No musty basement smell.
Just a dry, protected foundation that can actually handle New Hampshire winters.
If your basement gets wet every spring… it’s not bad luck — it’s bad drainage.
