Should you change your locks when you move into a new home?
You don't necessarily need new locks.

In many cases, your existing locks can simply be rekeyed so the old keys no longer work.

The bigger issue is that you usually don't know how many copies of the old key are still out thereโ€”from previous owners, tenants, contractors, cleaners, or anyone else who was given one.

Rekeying keeps your existing hardware but gives you a fresh set of keys and makes the old ones useless.

Why your key gets harder to turn

Ever notice your key getting harder to turn?
Don't force it.

A worn key, dirt inside the lock, or normal wear can all cause extra resistance.
Ignoring it can eventually leave you with a key that won't turn at all.

Catching the problem early is usually much easier than dealing with a lockout later.

"Can you program keys if someone already replaced the ignition?"

Usually, yes.

Replacing the ignition only changes the mechanical lock.

The vehicle still has to recognize the key electronically before it'll start.

That's why many ignition replacements still need key programming afterward.

After diagnosing the issue and getting everything programmed correctly, they left with a working key again.

Sometimes the internet makes repairs look easier than they are.
