Did you know that Common Hackberry is polygamo-monoecious, producing male (staminate), female (pistillate), and perfect flowers on the same tree? This means you only need a single tree for viable seed/fruit production. These are shade trees or canopy trees that have a high ecological value. They are well adapted to urban/suburban environments. They are fairly fast growers and, given their mature size, it is recommended to plant them away from structures that could be damaged from falling branches. Hackberry has a high value to wildlife, so is a great tree to add to your landscape.
Boneset has very distinctive leaves and beautiful composite flowers with a very pleasant fragrance. It is typically found growing in wet meadows and water’s edge ecosystems, but it is also well adapted to urban and suburban yards as long as the soil retains moisture- think clay soil or soil with high humus content. When in bloom, this species is covered with pollinators of every stripe, dot or splotch. It does spread readily, so it is best suited for larger spaces and planted with species of similar habit.
