What happens when individual property rights butt up against what is best for the greater good, what is best for the eco system, the environment? Wealth has allowed a few members of society to build and develop in natural areas, to have easy access to these beautiful spaces. Unfortunately, in many cases, poor planning, poor building and a poor understanding of nature results in potentially fatal consequences to these developments. The even poorer "solutions" to mitigate these threats only exacerbate the damage to the environment. At what point do we push back on these privileged passion developments, on the privatization of nature? When do we place the priority on nature and not the protection of a poorly placed mansion on a dune?

Metro Detroit area. Looking to grow my list of reputable tree services that operate in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb. Many of my clients require this service, so I would like a larger go to list of arborists who are trustworthy, skilled and knowledgeable. Who have you used? Please share recommendations and contact in the comments. Thank you!!!!

You hear them, but you do not aways see them! Well, sometimes you do. This is a Cedar Waxwing. My Merlin app is always identifying it by its call, but on this day it graced me with it's presence on the Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana).

I have reduced the price of certain species of which I have too many, and I would rather see them get planted. These need to be purchased as full flats of 38 or 32. Most are priced at $1/plug which is a steal! I even have a flat that is free. Here are the available flats at the reduced prices.
Rattlesnake Master, Black-eyed Susan (hirta), Early Sunflower (free), Joe Pye (maculatum), Boneset, Blue Lobelia, Fox Sedge.
Pick up only. Find the full plant list at https://www.plantsforecology.com/downloads.

Sometimes the universe gifts you these moments. Maybe we should work harder to save this world? Maybe going to Mars, turning our lives over to AI and generally commodifying the entire planet is not the right direction. Maybe, just maybe, the Cooper's Hawk is saying we have a damn good place worth protecting right here!

Did you know that Common Hackberry is polygamo-monoecious, producing male (staminate), female (pistillate), and perfect flowers on the same tree? This means you only need a single tree for viable seed/fruit production. These are shade trees or canopy trees that have a high ecological value. They are well adapted to urban/suburban environments. They are fairly fast growers and, given their mature size, it is recommended to plant them away from structures that could be damaged from falling branches. Hackberry has a high value to wildlife, so is a great tree to add to your landscape.
Boneset has very distinctive leaves and beautiful composite flowers with a very pleasant fragrance. It is typically found growing in wet meadows and water’s edge ecosystems, but it is also well adapted to urban and suburban yards as long as the soil retains moisture- think clay soil or soil with high humus content. When in bloom, this species is covered with pollinators of every stripe, dot or splotch. It does spread readily, so it is best suited for larger spaces and planted with species of similar habit.
