Why did this columbine grow leaves almost as big as my hand? The answer is written in how plants respond to their environment. šŸ§¬šŸ‘‡

I recently noticed that my potted columbines (Aquilegia) growing in full shade have developed unusually massive foliage. They look completely different from their sun-grown counterparts.

This isn’t a genetic mutation. It’s a great example of phenotypic plasticity—the ability of an organism to alter its physical traits in response to its environment without changing its underlying DNA sequence.

Unlike animals, plants are sessile—they can’t simply move when conditions change. Instead, they respond to environmental cues by adjusting how they grow.

Here’s what’s happening with those giant shade leaves:

🌿 Optimizing Surface Area: In lower light, many plants produce larger leaves, increasing the surface area available to intercept light.

ā˜€ļø The Solar Panel Effect: A larger leaf can capture more of the limited light reaching the plant, helping it maintain photosynthesis in a shady environment.

šŸ’§ The Sunny Alternative: Plants growing in brighter, hotter conditions often develop smaller and/or thicker leaves and other traits that help manage heat, water loss and intense radiation.

Same DNA. Different environment. Different-looking plant.

That’s the fascinating thing about phenotypic plasticity: a plant’s appearance isn’t dictated by genetics alone. What you see is the result of genetics interacting with the environment around it.

Those giant leaves aren’t necessarily a sign that the plant is struggling—they can be part of the plant’s response to its particular microclimate.

You’ve been lied to about deep-root watering.

That statement will probably make some people angry… and that’s okay.

According to Colorado State University Extension, most of a tree’s feeder roots—the roots responsible for absorbing most of the water and nutrients—are located within the top 12 inches of soil.

So why are so many homeowners paying to have water injected several feet underground?

I’m not saying every deep-root watering service is worthless. I’m saying homeowners deserve to know what current research says before they spend their money. Deep root ā€œfeedingā€ is an entirely different topic and deserves its own discussion.

Even better, Denver Water’s current drought rules allow you to water trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and vegetables any day using a hand-held hose or low-volume, non-spray irrigation (like drip or a soaker hose). Just avoid watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

A few weeks ago, I looked out my window and couldn’t believe what I was seeing…a tortoise making a beeline for my native flower meadow. 🐢🌼

At first, I thought it was a native turtle. After a little research, I realized it was actually someone’s missing pet tortoise!

I posted on Nextdoor hoping to find the owner, and before long, Charlie was reunited with his owner. ā¤ļø

It was a happy ending—and a fun reminder of something I love about native landscapes. Whether it’s pollinators, birds, or even the occasional wandering tortoise, creating habitat brings nature a little closer to home.

This Wild Bergamot is absolutely buzzing right now! šŸ

One of the best things about growing native plants is seeing your garden come alive with pollinators.

Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) blooms during the heat of summer, providing nectar for bumblebees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and many other beneficial insects. It’s also drought tolerant once established and a beautiful addition to sunny gardens.

This purple coneflower started as a small plug that fit in the palm of my hand.

One growing season later, it’s already flowering, feeding pollinators, and blending into the meadow.

One-gallon pots definitely have their place, but if you’re planting dozens—or hundreds—of natives, don’t underestimate what a plug can become.

Three years ago, this was just a traditional Kentucky bluegrass lawn.

Today it’s filled with native wildflowers, buzzing pollinators, singing birds, and far more life than I ever imagined.

Replacing part of my lawn wasn’t about creating a perfect garden—it was about creating habitat. Along the way, I discovered that native plants can be beautiful, resilient, and surprisingly rewarding.

If you’ve been thinking about planting a native meadow, let this be your sign that it’s worth it. It doesn’t happen overnight, but watching it come to life has been one of the most rewarding projects I’ve ever done.

Most people told me to buy the biggest plants I could afford.

I’m glad I didn’t.

Instead, I planted native plugs. They cost less, were easier to install, and after a few weeks they filled in to create the meadow I was hoping for.

I really wish someone had told me this sooner!

Most people assume bigger plants are the better deal.

I did too.

For this planting, using native plugs cost 36% less than buying the same area with one-gallon pots. Better yet, I was able to plant 4Ɨ more natives, which helped the meadow fill in faster and left less room for Kentucky bluegrass and weeds.

This footage is just 30 days after planting.

Native plugs may not look impressive on day one—but don’t underestimate what happens after they’re get established.

Three years ago, I removed a section of Kentucky bluegrass and replaced it with native plugs and seed.

A lot of people focus on how small plugs are.

I focus on how many I can afford to plant.

By starting with plugs, I was able to establish hundreds of native plants for a fraction of the cost of mature nursery pots.

The result?
