A lot of love have gone into the raspberries this year, and after the other day I can also say a lot of pain went into them. I mentioned it on my stories l, but the other night I went out to pick some raspberries to go with our pancake dinner and had an unfortunate encounter with a yellow jacket.

With most wasps only the queen survives winter and this time of year the rest of the colony is scavenging for as much food for her as possible. They’re especially drawn to sugary meals and rotting or fallen fruit is a common target so I make it a point of staying on top of picking the berries. Well I was in a hurry and decided to skip shoes. I’m not sure if I got too close to stepping on a yellow jacket or if I grabbed a berry that she was hoping for but I knew I aggravated her somehow when she got my toe. I actually had to reach down and swipe her off because she wasn’t letting go. 😬I said a few choice words and grabbed my son to go inside in case that wasp sounded the alert for an attack, and thankfully I was the only casualty.

I’ve been trying to grow in my tolerance of wasps because they do a great job of hunting pests (to feed their young). But this set me back a couple steps. Have you ever been stung by a wasp? If so, how do you handle being around them?

The first daikon radish is getting close to harvest time. These radishes are very popular in Asian cuisine. My husband is Vietnamese so we will probably pickle one for some homemade banh mi sandwiches or go fusion and make some banh mi style tacos. They can also be used and soups and salads and much, much more.

Radishes grow relatively quickly and take up hardly any space so even if you think you won’t eat very many, why not plant a couple at a time around the empty spaces in your garden?

Why is kale never lonely?
Because it always comes in bunches.

My kale is almost ready to start harvesting. I’m a big fan of kale salads, but I always make sure to marinate for a bit before serving so it’s more enjoyable to eat. How do you eat this healthful leafy green?

This broccoli plant has been in my garden for months. A friend had a bunch of extra broccoli seedlings in the Spring and even though I didn’t have a ton of room in my garden I couldn’t turn down a free plant (anyone else? 🙋🏼‍♀️). Well I put it in my bike basket and started making my way home. It was a bumpy ride and in my peripheral I could see dirt flying out of the cup but I had no choice but to keep pedaling. By the time I got home there was no dirt left, just a shaken up seedling. 🙈 I squeezed it into a corner of my garden next to the tomatoes and hoped for the best. It took root but was quickly shaded by my aggressive cherry tomato plant. The tomatoes ended up providing enough shade to keep it alive and slowly growing through the summer heat. Now that my tomatoes are gone and the weather is cooling, it’s really taken off. Time will tell if this underdog is ready to shine and produce some broccoli. 🤞🏻

Our peppers made it through our September snow and are still producing but I can tell they are winding down. This year I planted Thai Chillies, Bell Peppers, and Jalapeños. Next year I want to add a couple more pepper plants and I’m thinking shish*tos and habaneros. Maybe another sweet variety. What would you add to the line up?

Swipe to see the nature scene I happened upon in the chili peppers. 😳🙈😂 @ Denver, Colorado

My cover crop is really starting to fill in on my summer raised bed. I use a blend from that includes Austrian field pea, wheat, triticale, forage collards, hairy vetch, daikon radish, crimson clover, berseem clover, and yellow mustard. Do you have to use a cover crop? No, but for the health of your soil it’s best to not leave it exposed and bare during the winter. Even using mulch or straw can help. Cover crops do require some management and you have to be mindful of what varieties will work best for your spaces/future crops.

What are the benefits of a cover crop?
▪️It reduces erosion and soil runoff, especially during winter precipitation or snowmelt.
▪️It increases organic matter in the soil which can improve biodiversity, build better soil structure, and increase the moisture holding capacity of the soil reducing future irrigation needs.
▪️Depending on the variety and management it can introduce nitrogen into the soil, reducing the need for subsequent fertilizer applications.
▪️It can reduce or alleviate soil compaction if you use varieties with tap roots that pe*****te the deeper layers of soil.
▪️By providing a diversity of nutrients to the beneficial microbes in the soil it can help suppress soil borne diseases.
▪️It can suppress w**d growth by acting as a natural mulch.
▪️It can provide a winter habitat for beneficial insects.
