It's a rainy day here in Minnesota; it's rare that I find myself working for an extended period of time in front of the computer - but today... I just don't really feel like getting and staying soaked!
Days like these can saturate the topsoil, something that we very much need in this time of severe drought - but it does come with it's problems. Trees fall, especially in wind - and the first to go are often the weak, hollow ones like Oak (oak wilt), or the ones with shallow roots, like Aspen (trunk rot).
Add wind, and it intensifies.
I see new trees down almost every day that I am out on the highway. It's part of being a "tree guy:" you're always on the lookout for work. So you might see me leave a card or a note at your door, or in your rural mailbox.
Depending on the situation, I do fell trees, however - more often than not, I find myself cleaning up all messes big and small. Ones that happen organically.
Also, I love creating and maintaining trails that enhances a property owners' ability to enjoy their surroundings.
In this case - I cleared a chunk of ground at the end of a client's driveway so that they could see oncoming traffic, and also the myriad of wildlife, flora and fauna along the way.
I took it species by species - removing the “undesirables” like Hazel or Arrowwood, and keeping “desirables” like baby maples, or fruit trees like serviceberry ( juneberry). This is very selective harvest - not Clearcut.
Before and after photos below.
With me - it's manual labor, and hand tools like the chainsaw and hand held brushcutter. It takes a little more time, and it's harder work - but, it's much easier on the landscape.
