Pecan trees are about as Texan as it gets—long-lived, generous, and a little particular about how they’re treated. With the right approach, they provide both dependable shade and a seasonal harvest. Not a bad return for a single planting.

Think of it this way, being confined in a small space for an extended amount of time isn't great for any living thing.

Planting trees requires various considerations, from soil quality to the choice of species. One factor that often goes under the radar is caliper size. There is less likelihood of complications with root health when planting smaller trees.

You can water a tree all you want but if the fine roots are too damaged to absorb anything it will not improve your tree’s health.

We are looking forward to the much needed rain. With that said, keep an eye on your trees for any sudden changes. Soil shifting is a concern post drought conditions and heavy rain. Healthy trees and stressed trees react to environmental forces very differently.

If we say it enough maybe more people will do this. Water your trees, deep and infrequent. That means hose on a slow low drip, not hitting the trunk, and radiating out the circumference of the canopy.

No surprise here: the drought status has gotten worse across all of North Texas. Extreme drought conditions have expanded and included much of NTX including the metroplex.
