I told Jose we were going to do things the right way this time, even if it meant backtracking on everything we thought we knew.

A few years back, we made the classic mistake of hiring an office assistant when we had no idea how to train them properly. We saw their impressive resume, assumed they'd figure it out, and basically said "you know QuickBooks, right? Show us how it works." Spoiler alert: they expected us to already have systems in place.

Now I handle all our backend operations - billing, scheduling, compliance, making sure we actually get paid. Jose is out in the field managing projects 100% of the time. I'm slowly transitioning into sales after completing a sales bootcamp, alternating proposals with him while I build confidence with products and client conversations.

The goal? Train myself thoroughly in sales so I can eventually hire and properly train an office admin to take over what I'm doing. This time, I'll know exactly what to teach them because I've done every part of the job myself.

After leaving my 10-year education career to support this business, I wasn't about to let us repeat the same hiring mistakes. Sometimes you have to go backward to build the foundation that lets you move forward the right way.

When I left education, I went from having 50 school counselors I could call for help to sitting alone in my office wondering "who do I even ask?"

That isolation nearly broke me in those first six months. I'd quit on Jose every other weekend because I felt so lost without my professional network.

But here's what saved our business: swallowing my pride and asking for help. I started texting Jason Phillips with random questions. I messaged other contractors. I showed up to PCA events even when I felt like the newest person in the room.

Oscar from Milan Painting literally came to my house for breakfast to teach me production rates because I'm a visual learner and couldn't figure it out over the phone.

The painting industry has this incredible community where people actually want to help each other succeed. Sarah Ross spent hours with me on Zoom fixing our QuickBooks mess. Michael shares resources freely. These aren't my competitors - they're my lifeline.

If you're struggling alone in your painting business, you don't have to. The help is there, but you have to be brave enough to ask for it. The moment I stopped trying to figure everything out by myself was the moment we started actually building something sustainable.

I quit my school counselor job to help my husband grow our painting business, and our household income dropped significantly. We were staying busy with jobs, but something wasn't adding up — one plus one wasn't equaling two.

We were paying our painters by the day and using what I now know was "guesstimation" for pricing. I'd never heard of production rates before attending one of Jason Phillips' contractor events. When he explained why the way most people price jobs doesn't work, it was an eye-opener.

I started digging into our numbers, not even knowing what I was looking for. But when your family's financial security depends on figuring out why you're busy but not profitable, you become really motivated to find answers fast.

The transition from a steady educator's salary to the unpredictable reality of construction cash flow was jarring. But it forced me to understand our business in ways my husband never had to when he was running it solo for years.

I used to be terrified of giving estimates on the spot. For months, I'd measure everything, take notes, then go back to the office to "work up numbers" – which really meant I was buying time because I was scared of making a mistake in front of the client.

The truth is, one of my very first closed jobs happened when I finally pushed through that fear and presented the proposal right there in their living room. There's something powerful about walking through exactly what we're going to paint, which products we'll use, and how long each phase will take while we're standing in the actual space together.

I'm still learning – especially with repairs like wall holes where I sometimes need Jose's input on pricing. But I've discovered that homeowners actually appreciate the detailed explanations more than perfect speed. When I can say "here's exactly what your investment covers and why we use this specific paint for your kitchen cabinets," it eliminates all that he-said-she-said confusion that happens when estimates are vague.

The detailed proposals I've seen from other contractors inspired me to be thorough rather than rushed. Clients deserve to understand what they're getting before we show up with brushes and ladders.
