Look who decided to stop by our booth at the farmers market today…
Meet Jerry the Swamp Milkweed Beetle! We found this little guy hanging out on one of our milkweed plants, and we figured he deserved a proper introduction.
A few fun facts about swamp milkweed beetles:
🌿 They feed primarily on milkweed plants.
🧡 Their bright orange-red and black coloring warns predators that they may be unpalatable.
🐛 Like monarch caterpillars, they benefit from the protective chemicals found in milkweed.
🌼 While they may nibble on milkweed leaves, they’re a natural part of Kentucky’s native ecosystem and another reminder of how important native plants are for supporting wildlife.
We love seeing all the different insects and pollinators that our native plants attract—it means they’re doing exactly what they’re supposed to do!
Thank you to everyone who stopped by and visited us today. We hope to see you again next Saturday at the Harrison County Farmers Market!
