I often see people advertising a “pickup load” of firewood for under $100, and I’ll be honest—I do not understand how that price makes sense once the labor, equipment, fuel, time, and handling are all considered.
Firewood is not easy money. It is physical, time-consuming work from start to finish: cutting, splitting, stacking, loading, hauling, delivering, and often handling the same wood multiple times before it ever reaches the customer.
When I was younger, I sold firewood cheaply because I did not fully understand pricing, overhead, or the amount of work involved. I also had help moving and selling it, so I was not looking at it from a true business standpoint.
There is a difference between someone trying to make a little extra cash and someone trying to operate a sustainable firewood business. That difference shows up in pricing.
For anyone who thinks my prices are too high, I would invite you to spend a full day doing the work with me. After that, I believe most people would understand why this is not minimum-wage labor.
