We are getting close to fall planting time, homies! You can establish perennials, shrubs, trees, herbs in the fall and it is actually the easier growing season. (On account of the cooler temps and gentle rains.) I can’t wait to start replacing grass with native shrubs and perennials this season. This plant is a native called wingstem. What are your plans for fall gardening?

August to me is The Other January. After drought and deer, the garden celebrations are slim this time of year. I savor the understated wins but also savor indoor hobbies and chores in the AC. I am also thinking about what I want to plant this October-a MUCH easier time to establish shrubs, trees, natives, perennials. I’m still keeping my sights on replacing grass/bare patches with native plantings. Hang in there! Rain and cooler temps are coming.

A neighbor in my hometown had a stone wall with plantings scattered throughout the stonework and I have always wanted one.

Last night, I started making a dead hedge to create a divide between the grass and a small garden bed around the patio. Dead hedges support birds and insects. Easy to make, just pound two rows of some sturdy stakes into the ground and fill with twigs and garden debris. After the winter we had, I have plenty of twigs and branches.

After spending a week up North for college visits with my daughter, I came home to my early spring gardens and seeing them unfurl has given me spring gardening momentum! I’m accepting a few clients for spring garden coaching sessions and can even coach remotely.
