If a torrential rain can't drain down through the soil fast enough it naturally moves horizontally-- finding it's way through the gaps and cracks in your foundation and then into your basement (aided by hydrostatic pressure).

Here is the best method I've found to minimize it from happening.

1. Rake / clean out a 3 foot wide path on the ground in front of your foundation. If you have plants / shrubs, just work around them. If the soil slopes down and away from house, spread 6 mil (or heavier) plastic sheeting flat along this path and up tight to foundation. If the soil does not slope away from house, regrade it using any clean "'fill' and then add your plastic sheeting.

2. Cover the plastic sheet with 2" layer of pea-stone or small gravel. If you like the look, then you're done. If not, then add a layer of your preferred mulch on top of the stone.

3. Extend your downspouts to drain a minimum of 4' from house.
