October is a great time to plant an herb garden in Louisiana as cooler temperatures help them get established.

Some of the perennial herbs that do well and can be planted now are lemon balm, rosemary, burnet, sorrel, catmint, garlic chives, oregano, thyme, sage, lavender and many more.

Herbs like parsley, cilantro, dill, chicory and fennel are a few annuals that you can plant now. Most herbs require direct sun at least four to six hours a day and excellent drainage.

Our butterfly garden at the Southeast Louisiana National Wildlife Refuge in Lacombe has officially earned Silver Certification from the Louisiana Native Plant Society!

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our Master Gardener volunteers, we’re now just a few plants away from achieving Gold Certification!

We invite you to visit the garden, enjoy its beauty, and see firsthand the results of our efforts to create a welcoming habitat for butterflies, pollinators, and other wildlife.

Fall Planting at Marigny Elementary School!

We spent much of September in the gardens at Marigny Elementary School, helping students plant their fall vegetable beds!

This year, 280 Pre-K4, Kindergarten, and First Grade students visited the gardens over three different days to get their hands in the soil and learn a little about growing their own food.

September 15 – First Grade
We kicked off our fall planting with ten classes of First Graders. Students planted seedlings of broccoli, collards, mustard greens, and dinosaur kale. In the pizza garden, they planted green onions, basil, and cherry tomatoes. 🍕

September 22 – Kindergarten
Our Kindergarteners planted sweet potato slips in the raised beds in the Louisiana Crops section of the garden. We’re pleased to report that they’re doing well and already growing! Another group planted long bush beans and sugar snap peas in the trellis beds.

September 29 – Pre-K4
Our youngest gardeners wrapped up September by planting two beds of lettuce and two beds of colorful Halloween radishes. 🥬

We even had two honorary students join us in the garden this fall. 👀 See if you can spot Dolly and Kenny in the photos!

Now we’re hoping for a little rain and providing plenty of watering along the way, so all of these beds will produce a wonderful harvest. After the Christmas holidays, we hope to cook and share some of the vegetables with the children who helped grow them. 💚

There’s nothing quite like watching children plant a tiny seed or seedling and later get to taste something they helped grow!

Flutter into the fall season at our Garden Fest September 12 with the St. Tammany Master Gardener Association ! Starting at 9 a.m., listen to presentations from our guest speakers, attend table talks, participate in various activities, win door prizes and enjoy some light refreshments.
