This tree is splitting down the middle, and that’s never a good sign.
You can see it’s working hard to heal itself, but the new wood is only growing on the outside of the crack. Someone already tried fixing it with a bolt, but one bolt just isn’t enough on its own.
What this tree actually needs is a couple more bolts and the right kind of pruning — not thinning out the middle, but shortening the outer branches so the whole canopy becomes shorter and stouter. That takes a lot of the wind’s leverage off the weak spot.

This little red oak was showing canopy dieback, had a buried root flare with circling and choking roots, and was sitting in hard-packed, nutrient-poor soil.

In this video you’ll see us air-spading to expose and correct the root flare, prune the circling/choking roots, then radial trench and incorporate compost throughout the critical root zone.

This is what lion’s tailing looks like — and why this tree now has to come down.
Over-pruning like this strips the interior foliage, weakens the structure, and leaves the tree stressed and hazardous. It’s one of the most common mistakes I see in The Woodlands and North Houston.

Why Lion's Tailing & Over-Thinning Can Destroy Your Trees

Just wanted to show you this classic example of what happens after lion's tailing and heavy interior thinning.
They pruned it, removed a ton of interior growth, and then a windstorm came through and snapped multiple branches — exactly where the tree became weak and tip-heavy.
This is why we follow ISA standards and focus on reduction pruning with purpose: structural development, better wind-load management, and keeping a full, healthy canopy. No hacking, no lion-tailing, no creating weak branches that fail later.

🌳 Why We Don’t Recommend W**d Fabric (W**d Barriers) Around Trees in North Houston

Many homeowners in The Woodlands, Spring, and surrounding areas install landscape fabric thinking it will provide long-term w**d control and make maintenance easier. Unfortunately, it often creates more problems for your trees than it solves…

Here’s the reality with w**d barriers:

• Over time, mulch and debris decompose on top of the fabric, creating a new layer of soil where w**ds still germinate and grow. (See first two photos)

• The fabric acts as a barrier that restricts water infiltration, oxygen exchange, and healthy ecosystem deeper in the soil

• Tree roots can become trapped in shallow, unstable layers above the fabric, leading to reduced drought tolerance, nutrient deficiencies, circling/girdling roots, and overall tree stress.

At Good Roots Tree Care, we focus on root-cause solutions and long-term tree health. We avoid practices that interfere with the natural soil biology and critical root zone that trees need to thrive.

Better approaches for w**d management:

✅ Targeted pre-emergent or post-emergent herbicides when needed — but we do not recommend soil-active ingredients like imazapyr products, which can harm beneficial microbes and tree roots.

✅ Plant desirable groundcovers or shrubs to naturally crowd out w**ds.

✅ Apply 2–4 inches of natural mulch under the tree canopy, but kept off the trunk and root flare.

✅ Pull w**ds by hand — effective and chemical-free… though more labor intensive!

🌳 Just dropped this big dead Willow Oak into the backyard — and it shattered everywhere on impact.
This thing was completely dead and rotten, falling apart.
No assessment needed — it was a serious hazard. Climbing it was not possible, so we took it down with a controlled drop into the open yard.

Dead trees like this are ticking time bombs in North Houston storms.
Good thing it’s gone now.

🌲 Protecting Your Pines: Why Bark Beetle Treatments Matter in North Houston

If you’ve noticed more dead or declining pines in The Woodlands, Spring, or Conroe neighborhoods lately, you’re not alone.

Every year we lose a percentage of our local pine trees to pine bark beetles. These pests don’t attack healthy, vigorous trees first — they seek out the weaker, stressed ones.

In our urban North Houston soils, most pines struggle with compaction, poor biology, and limited root function. This reduces the tree’s natural defense: sap production. Without enough sap to “pitch out” the beetles, even large, beautiful backyard pines near homes become vulnerable.

That’s why we recently treated this large pine (and several others on the property) with a systemic injection.

✅ The treatment is injected directly into the tree’s vascular system

✅ It provides protection for up to two years

✅ It’s a preventative measure — not a cure for already heavily infested trees

🌳 Meet the “Covenant Tree” — a beautiful 55-year-old Southern Magnolia that’s been part of this North Houston family since their very first anniversary. ❤️
You can see the sweet little plaque in the first photo.

This special tree was starting to look a little sickly, so we came out last month to give it a proper structural pruning to protect from high winds and remove dead branches.

This week we returned to do a deep root feeding to rebuild the soil environment around its roots.
Most tree problems we see in The Woodlands, Spring, and Conroe start below ground — especially in our compacted North Houston soils.
