Consistency is key - for trust. Systems that doublecheck everything are needed so that small mistakes don’t set relationships back to square one. I do a lot of mentoring and it’s one of the key points. I am impressed upon younger designers, that small gaps or mistakes reset relationships to zero. That’s what makes them costly. In a world, daysailers, cruisers, and power boats… Be the lobsterman.

That painting on my desk, like most things in the Chase Design Services studio, has a story. Joe is the poster child for “chucking it all to reach for the stars.” His journey is extraordinary, and I was fortunate to connect with him at a major inflection point before he left the states. He’s back and his story only gets more amazing. His work reminds me that there’s no construction without some demo, there’s no transformation without change, and sometimes you have to break things open so they can fall together. I’m so grateful to him for sharing his incredible passion with all of us. .tavares.9275

2026 looks bright: Ochre-gold-honey-mango bright! When my mother was working on the historic paint study to discover the original colors for the Hancock-Clarke house in Lexington her research needed to be impeccable: each assumption supported, every fact documented. Historic preservation sometimes evolves, our understanding of what to do with primary source information might shift and deepen, but there’s a commitment to the truth that underlies it all. May your new year be full of truth, discovery, and bright beautiful buildings.

Fall fires are the best: friends, food, hanging around talking until late, until we’ve burned it all down to the embers. Firegazing, storytelling, … hearthkeeping at its best. At my house the fire pit is an old cast-iron cauldron, and even it has a story. I hope everyone gets a chance to tell their story this Fall, whatever circle you might be sitting in, whatever fire you might be around, I hope everyone gets to be heard.

The Beautiful and Talented Allie Keast fixing my favorite ring: there’s just nothing like meeting the maker. And then there’s nothing like going back to see her again when it needs a little fix and being welcomed into her whole magical workshop full of stones and plants and friends and inspiration. When’s the last time you got an awesome hug from your jeweler? It’s no secret that I support craftspeople. But this level of service and attention was, well, next level.

Built by Turner Construction Company and designed by le Corbusier, Harvard’s color-blocked Carpenter Center has always been one of my favorites. Teaching yesterday at the North Bennett Street School put me in mind of Corbu’s “five points” of design and reminded that when the process has intention and integrity, the outcome is ordered and beautiful. Thank you very much to Brock, Marc, Claire, the BAC, NBSS, and of course the students who asked amazing questions and were a delight.
