Way I was raised, our old neighbor use to try and pay. Well they figured out that wasn't happening,so they would just drop a 30 pack off. Elderly really couldn't return the favor, but we never wanted them to. Life lesson well taught.
Nobody kept score because everybody knew the deal.
Your neighbor knew plumbing, so he fixed your sink. Dad knew his way around a roof, so when that shed started leaking, he showed up with a ladder and a hammer.
Maybe somebody else had a truck. Somebody had a chainsaw. Somebody knew electrical. Somebody had the extension ladder everybody on the street borrowed.
Payment usually came in the form of returning the favor, a cold drink, or helping with something else six months later.
There wasn't an invoice.
There was just an understanding:
You helped people because eventually, everybody needed a hand.
