Classification/Title: Sound and Communications Apprentice
How many years in the trade? Since November 2025, I’m currently in 1-2
Current Contractor/Job site: Fisk at Metro purple line D extension. At constellation.
Favorite type of work/Job-site and why? This is my first job site. I like everything about it. I like learning different things and expanding my knowledge. I want to be the best at my trade.
Any tradeswomen who inspire you? Rosie the Riveter
Any advice for future Tradeswomen?
My advice is that if this is something you really love and feel you can handle the pressure, go for it. Cause it’s not easy out there and School too. It’s a big commitment. But as long as you really want it then anything is possible. Don’t let anyone choose your future. You are in control.

🌊☀️ Happy Solidarity Saturday! ☀️🌊
Our Beach Bash last weekend was all about good vibes, community, and solidarity! We loved bringing everyone together for a day of fun in the sun! Letter carriers, in town for their convention, joined us for a photo. It was awesome to spend the day with IBEW sisters and our NALC union siblings!

When we stand together, we build stronger bonds both on and off the job. ❤️✊

Happy Solidarity Saturday! This week’s shout out is Sherrie Whorton — IBEW Local 1141, OKC
Name: Sherrie Whorton
Trade/Local: IBEW Local 1141, OKC
Classification/Title: Inside General Foreman
How many years in the trade? 24 Years in the Electrical Trade
Current Contractor/Job site: I currently work for OESCO (Oklahoma Electrical Supply Company) in OKC at an active hospital, where we are installing a new fire alarm system throughout the 11-story building.
Favorite type of work and why? My favorite type of work is terminations, especially medium- and high-voltage terminations. I enjoy the precision and attention to detail that this type of work requires. Control cabinet makeups are also fun for me because they require that same level of precision and patience.
What’s your favorite Jobsite and why? My favorite job site to date is the University of Oklahoma stadium expansion. I am a die-hard Sooner fan, so being able to go to a game, look across the stadium, and know that I had a part in building it is an incredible feeling.

Any tradeswomen who inspire you and why?

Early in my apprenticeship, I had a foreman named Sharon who made a lasting impact on my career. She always went the extra mile to make sure I was constantly exposed to different aspects of the trade. She also encouraged me to get involved in my local union. Sharon and I started the OKC EWMC chapter when I was just a third-year apprentice.
Are you involved in any constituency groups?
Through my involvement in the union and constituency groups, I have been blessed with opportunities to learn about EWMC, CLUW, and TRADE. I now get to represent my local all over the nation, meet great people, and learn new skills along the way.

How many years have you been involved in the union? Member for 15 years on staff for almost 4 years.
What city and state are you based in? NYC and Hicksville, NY
What’s the work project you are most proud of and why? Rehabbing the relationship between the union and the members of a facility that had long favored mgmt. They had lost faith in the union due to inconsistent representation and broken promises. It took a lot of work but the whole shop became so union strong 💪🏽
Any union women who inspire you and why?
So many! I’m lucky to know so many strong and intelligent women in the labor movement but right now I am so inspired by my current union President, Yvonne Armstrong, and current union secretary treasurer, Veronica Turner-Biggs. They saw the need for change and joined forces to run a successful union campaign with integrity and thoughtfulness. All too often we see women in labor compete tooth and nail with one another for a foothold at the top. It’s refreshing to see two smart and driven women join forces to revamp and renew one of the largest locals in the country.
Are you involved in any AFLCIO constituency groups? CLUW, Pride at Work and LCLAA.
Any advice for future union women?
Don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, don’t be afraid to offer ideas, don’t be afraid to give your opinion, don’t be afraid to ask for help. That’s how you grow and learn and move forward in your career.

Current Contractor/Job Site: Sasco / Century City Hotel
Favorite type of work and why?
I enjoy commercial electrical work because every project is different and there’s always an opportunity to learn something new. It’s rewarding to see a project come together from start to finish.
What’s your favorite job site and why?
My favorite job site has been the one I’m currently working on, the Century City Hotel, because it has given me the opportunity to work with a great crew, expand my skills, and take on new challenges every day. It’s also the site where I journeyed out, making it an especially meaningful milestone in my career.
Any tradeswomen who inspire you and why?
I’m inspired by all the women in the trades who continue to break barriers, support one another, and prove that hard work and determination open doors for future generations.
Any advice for future Tradeswomen?
Believe in yourself, ask questions, never stop learning, and don’t be afraid to take up space. Stay confident, work hard, and remember that you earned your place in the trade.

Classification/Title: CAP Coordinator (Community Action Program) for UAW Region 1 (our union’s political arm)
Years involved in the union: 14 years
Based in: Detroit, MI
Work project most proud of: Toolkits that taught women and union leaders about their rights related to pregnancy, the Working Families Bargaining toolkit, and a toolkit on gender-based violence and harassment.

AFL-CIO constituency groups: CLUW (Coalition of Labor Union Women), where I serve as National Recording Secretary.
Union women who inspire you: The unnamed women and siblings who drive me to do more to educate and empower workers to be their own hero.
Advice for future union women: “Be your own hero.”

Favorite type of work and why?
I enjoy working at heights. It’s a huge contrast to a different career path I once had working in an office with poor lighting and stale air.
What’s your favorite jobsite and why?
A favorite jobsite was working on the Mulholland Bridge during the 405 freeway Sepulveda Pass project. That particular part of the 405 project had underground work as well as working at heights. This was back when I was an apprentice, so I learned so many things in that small part of the project.
Any tradeswomen who inspire you and why?
Jane Templin inspires me. Knowing Jane was able to navigate the male-dominated trades when few women were in construction is truly inspiring. I’m one of a handful of women that have worked and are currently working with traffic signals and street lighting. Jane continues to inspire me to keep going even during the times when difficult challenges come up in my career.
Any advice for future Tradeswomen?
Work safe and wear all your PPE all the time; it begins to feel less cumbersome when you use it consistently. Your mind and body are your most important assets, and self-care includes making sure your mental and physical health are taken care of before anything else.
