Extracting honey from our second bee yard! This honey is from the west side of Columbus. It is darker and a more mellow flavor. I can confirm- it is tasty.

Step 5: Manage Honey Cappings

There was about 15 lbs of honey drained from these cappings. We also can’t wait to repurpose the wax back onto frames for next year. Not wasting a thing!

Step 2- Putting out Escape Boards

We use escape boards to move the bees from the honey supers down into the bottom of the hive. This helps ensure the bees stay with their hive instead of coming with the super for extraction.

Step 1 of extracting honey: measuring moisture content

When our refractometer shows the moisture in our honey is below 18.6% then we are good to start the extraction process. Anything higher and we risk the honey fermenting over time. Looks like we are going to pull some honey soon!
