We remodeled a builder-grade fireplace into this floor-to-ceiling wall.

White trim now covers the wall in a grid of tall panels, from the floor to the ceiling. A long linear fireplace sits low in its own trimmed frame, a shelf runs across above it, and the TV is mounted on the panels over the shelf. The grey walls on each side let the white stand out.

Two taps on the counter, and the kegs sit right below them.

This bar has a b**r fridge built in under the counter, with the lines running straight up to a tower with two taps. Stained wood drawers sit beside it, and the wall behind the taps is a small dark mosaic tile. Above it all, a wood shelf and glass-front cabinets hold the rest of the bar.

The wall behind the desk is the whole office.

White trim set on the diagonal, corner to corner, so the diamonds run the full height of the wall. A black desk with cane drawer fronts sits in front of it, with a grey rug underneath and a dark green wall beside the window to keep the white from feeling stark. An olive tree in the corner and one patterned lamp, and the room is done.

One blue wall, and the whole bathroom has a personality.

Deep teal on the wall behind the toilet, with two white floating shelves set into it. Everything else stays calm: light grey walls, a dark vanity with a white top and chrome faucet, a round mirror, marble-look tile on the floor, and large grey tile in the tub surround with a mosaic band at the niche.

A light kitchen that still feels warm.

Pale wood cabinets, white counters with soft grey veining, and the same slab run up the wall behind the range instead of tile. A dark floor and black cage pendants keep all that light from washing out. The island carries the sink and a black faucet, so the prep happens facing the room.

Anyone who has carried a full stockpot across the kitchen knows why this tap is here.

Pot filler over the Wolf range, set into the white subway tile above the back burners. Pasta water, a pot of stock, the canning pot in August, all filled right where they boil. When you are done, it folds flat against the wall until the next big pot.

Wood overhead does something paint can't. It gives a room weight without touching a wall.

This beam runs right where the kitchen turns into the living room. The pendants over the island picked up the same wood in their cages, and the window trim across the room carries it again. Around them it's grey cabinets, white subway tile, and slate underfoot, cool on purpose so the warm reads.

Same wood, three places, and the whole space hangs together.

An open floor plan earns its keep in the evening, when the cooking and the sitting happen at the same time.

This living room runs straight into the kitchen with nothing between them: one wood floor front to back, white cabinetry along the far wall, a dark-topped bar where the two rooms meet, and pendants over the far run. From the front of the room there is a clear line to the kitchen window.

Two rooms' worth of use, one uninterrupted space.

Pattern works in a bathroom when it gets the whole wall. A strip of it reads as a border; floor to ceiling, it reads as a decision.

This wall carries a faded tapestry pattern in rust and blue, no two tiles quite alike, and it runs full height with a long window set right into it so the trees show through. Everything beside it stays quiet: glossy white tile in the shower, a simple niche, a clean counter.

One wall does the talking; the rest of the room lets it.

A green kitchen is a commitment. The color goes on every door and drawer, so everything around it has to be chosen to let it lead.

This one carries sage across the perimeter and the island in one unbroken coat. White subway tile and grey-veined counters step back, butcher block on the island warms it up, and the appliances run dark so the color stays the loudest choice in the room. Slim metal pulls repeat on every front.

One color, carried all the way through.
