Great information! I grew a bunch of pumpkins

This is just a quick reminder to harvest your pumpkins and winter squash at the right time, and also to put them through the "hardening off" process so they'll keep a long time in storage. Let's look at ripeness indicators first: the skin should be the mature color you're expecting (not still green, unless that's its mature color), the stem should be gold/brown in color, and you shouldn't be able to pierce the skin with your thumbnail. If it passes all 3 tests, harvest them by leaving at least an inch of the stem attached to the pumpkin or squash. Then you need to put them somewhere warm and light (i.e., greenhouse, enclosed porch with sunlight during the day, sunny area of a carport, etc.), where they're sheltered from the weather for 2 weeks. You can see mine are in our small greenhouse. Then you can finally put them into long-term storage (i.e., basement or on the floor of a closet, etc.). This finishes up the hardening-off process and helps them keep in storage for many months. Happy harvesting!
