My rain garden has come a long way since install spring 2025.

I moved into a new house a little over a year ago and let’s just say the yard didn’t have much going on. Since I prioritize designs that give more than they take, I knew I wanted to do a design for the yard that relied predominantly on rain water and wanted some sort of rain garden if that space allowed.

I quickly realized that every time it rained, the area where the path leading to the front door and the driveway met flooded each time it rained (see the second photo). Dodging wet feet every time it rained and I need to come and go was no fun. I knew a rain garden was the answer.

I dug out the rain garden about 5 inches deep so that it was lower than where the water pooled and used the excavated soil to raise the path around the rain garden. Next I added in plants that enjoy an occasional soggy time and consistent moisture. I selected almost entirely natives for this garden including, Joe Pye W**d, Buttonbush ‘Fiber Optics’, Blazing Star, Common Boneset, Clustered Mountain Mint, Lizard’s Tail, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Solar Cascade Goldenrod, and my favorite: Aquatic Milkweed. I will admit my irises are not a native species but they were a gift from my mother so what can you do. After planting, I put in a 3-4 inch layer of wood mulch which serves a few purposes. The mulch evens out the look of the garden so the pit you dug just appears to be the same level as the surrounding ground. Wood mulch also helps insulate the soil which protects plants from extreme hot and cold, prevents moisture loss through evaporation and it can hold up to 3x its weight in water.

In the first video you can see that the rain garden fixed my water pooling problem almost instantly. Although the garden gets FILLED with water whenever it rains, it drains within an hour once the rain stops. No mosquito breeding ponds here.

While the garden has undergone huge growth since install last year it’s still in it’s youth and still has some time till its reaches maturity. As the saying goes “the first year it sleeps, the second year it creeps and the third year it leaps”

Exciting things are happening in the Pollinator Garden! 🦋🐝

Blaine Moore of Green World Garden Design, recipient of the Richland County Master Gardener Outstanding Community Volunteer Award, has recently taken over the care of this space and is thoughtfully redesigning it using native plants. Her plan also includes information on host plants and the pollinators that visit them.

This sketch offers a glimpse of her vision, and we’re excited to watch it come to life! Thank you, Blaine, for sharing your talent, creativity, and expertise with the Garden.

Thank you to the Richland County Master Gardeners for the outstanding community volunteer award. And to my lovely grandmother (who is an awesome gardener btw) for getting me involved with the Master Gardeners and gardening. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree that’s for sure, the love for plants was definitely passed down. And I might not be doing what I do now without her.

Thanks Granny 💕

Did someone say pollinators?

Design for the Pollinator Garden 🐝 at the Master Gardener Sandhill Children’s Garden is complete. Using majority native plants, this garden will support a huge array of pollinators species through their entire lifecycle. From caterpillar 🐛 to butterfly 🦋, we’ll have them covered 😉.

New plans in the works for the pollinator garden at the Sandhills Children’s Garden. Stay tuned for the finalized plans coming soon.

I always start my plans by sketching over pictures taken in the design space before starting the garden blueprints. This way it’s easier for me and clients to visualize what the garden will actually look like on the ground because most of us aren’t viewing the garden from an aerial view… unless you happen to be a bird 🐦.

Note: These images are a rough draft for visualization purposes and are not to scale. Adjustments may occur as the plans are scaled and finalized.

The Sandhills Children’s Garden is free to visit and fun for all ages. Checkout their page below for details.

Another Pollinator Friendly Design

This design is for a client we had previously done a consultation for a few posts back. A few things have been changed from the consultation vision but the overall vision remains.

This property is marsh front in Charleston, SC with lots and lots of sun! We’ve dedicated the front yard to tons of native sun loving perennials that pollinators love , planned a Fruit Tree Alley for the side of the house, dedicated a space for a chicken coop that can hold 20 chickens, a patio for entertainment (and future home to a Cobb oven) and plenty of other beautiful plants to spice things up.

Check out our services at greenworldgardendesign.com to bring all the pollinators to your yard too.
