From weathered to revived ✨

This Whitefish home’s front and back decks had seen their share of Montana weather. Faded finish, gray wood and uneven wear had taken away a lot of their original beauty — but there was still plenty of life left in the wood.

We sanded the decks back to bare wood and applied a fresh finish, bringing out the natural warmth and character that had been hiding underneath. The front deck is red cedar, while the back is a mix of red and white cedar — creating some beautiful natural variation throughout the finished deck.

Swipe through to see the transformation from start to finish ➡️

If your deck is looking gray, faded or worn, it may not need to be replaced — it may just need to be revived.

🪵 Not everyone who can run a sander should be sanding your hardwood floors.

We often see hardwood floor refinishing offered alongside general handyman or contracting services. And while there are talented people in every trade, hardwood floor refinishing is a specialty for a reason.

Professional refinishing is a lot more than renting a drum sander and applying a few coats of polyurethane.

The equipment matters. Rental equipment can have an unknown maintenance history, worn components, or performance issues that can contribute to chatter, waves, drum marks and an uneven floor. Professional flooring contractors invest in commercial sanding equipment that they know, maintain, and operate every day.

The process matters, too. Professional refinishing isn’t one machine and one pass. Depending on the floor, the process can involve multiple sanding machines, edging, filling, carefully selected grit progressions, blending, and final surface preparation before a drop of finish ever touches the wood.

There’s a reason for those steps. Knowing which grit to start with, which grits can safely be skipped, how to blend the field with the edges, and how to properly prepare the wood for finish all affect the final result. Mistakes made during sanding don’t disappear when the finish goes down — they often become even more noticeable.

And then there’s the finish itself.

Not all “poly” is created equal. Finish systems vary significantly in durability, cure time, sheen, chemical resistance and overall performance. Knowing which products are appropriate for a particular floor — and how to properly prepare and apply them — is part of the craft.

Hardwood refinishing isn’t just about making an old floor shiny again. The quality of the work underneath is what determines the quality of the finished floor.

There’s a reason hardwood flooring professionals invest thousands of dollars in specialized equipment, professional products, training and years of experience.

Before hiring someone to refinish your hardwood floors, ask what equipment they use, what their sanding process looks like, and what finish system they’ll be applying.

Your hardwood floors are a permanent part of your home. Make sure the person sanding them knows hardwood floors.

Because the lowest refinishing quote isn’t always the least expensive option when the floor has to be sanded again to fix the first one. 🪵

From worn and scratched to beautifully restored. ✨

It’s hard to believe these are the same floors.

This Whitefish project had plenty of scratches, worn finish, and signs of everyday life. After a full sand and refinish, the hardwood has a fresh start while keeping all of the character that makes real wood floors so beautiful.

There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing a transformation like this.

Three IPE decks. One complete restoration.

These three IPE hardwood decks on Glen Lake had weathered to a silver-gray patina over time. To restore them, we sanded them back to fresh wood using our brush sanding system before applying a penetrating natural/colorless oil designed specifically for exotic hardwoods.

The result? A rich, natural appearance that highlights the beauty of the wood without changing its color.

You’ll also notice that a few areas still show faint discoloration from where an outdoor rug had sat for an extended period. Those are tannin stains that had penetrated deep into the wood over time. Even after sanding to fresh wood, some of that discoloration remained—a good reminder that not every stain lives only on the surface.

The best part? This isn’t the end of the story.
These homeowners are now on our annual maintenance program. Each year we’ll inspect the decks and apply a fresh maintenance coat before the finish has a chance to fail. That proactive approach keeps the wood protected, greatly extends the life of the restoration, and helps avoid the expense of another full sanding for many years.

Exotic hardwoods like IPE are an investment. With the right maintenance, they’ll stay that way.

When properly maintained, an IPE deck can last for decades. 🌲

This beautiful lakefront IPE hardwood deck in Bigfork had naturally weathered to a silver-gray patina over time.
Rather than simply applying more oil over the weathered surface, we sanded the deck back to fresh wood using our brush sanding system before applying a natural (colorless) impregnating oil specifically formulated for exotic hardwoods.

The result? The rich, natural beauty of the IPE shines through once again while the penetrating oil helps nourish and protect the wood from Montana’s harsh climate—without creating a film that can peel or flake.

If your hardwood deck has turned gray, don’t assume it needs to be replaced. In many cases, a professional restoration can bring it back to life.

When another contractor calls in a panic... you answer. 👊

We received a call from a local contractor after their client’s hardwood floor was accidentally scratched. To make matters worse, after calling around, they were told the repair would require a special-order finish, delaying the project even further.

Fortunately, we had just wrapped up a deck restoration project in Eureka a couple of days early and happened to have an opening in our schedule.

Even better—we keep professional two-component hardwood finishes in stock because they’re our go-to finish for many of our projects. That meant no waiting on materials.

By midday, we were on site performing a professional screen and recoat, restoring the finish and getting the project back on track.

Just 4 hours later, the floor had been professionally screened and recoated, the scratch was blended out, and the project was back on track.

✨ Swipe to see the before, the scratch, and the after!

Not every damaged hardwood floor needs a complete sand and refinish. When the damage is limited to the finish layer and the existing coating is compatible, a screen and recoat can often restore the floor’s appearance while adding a fresh layer of protection.

We’re grateful the contractor trusted us with their client’s home, and even more grateful we were able to help turn a stressful situation into a happy ending for everyone involved.
