Did you know spacing plants properly can actually save you money long-term?

One of the biggest mistakes in landscaping is planting everything too tightly just to make a bed look “full” immediately.

Over time, overcrowded plants:

→ Compete for water

→ Grow unevenly

→ Require more trimming and replacement

→ Create unnecessary maintenance issues

Landscapes like this are intentionally spaced to grow *into* the design over time.

It may look simpler on day one, but a year from now, it usually looks healthier, cleaner, and far more balanced.

One of the biggest mistakes in landscaping is designing only for how a yard looks on day one.

Great landscapes are designed with growth in mind.

As these plants mature, the space becomes fuller, softer, and more connected to the environment around it.

That’s part of why plant selection matters so much in Texas landscapes:
the right plants don’t just survive here.

They settle in and thrive.

And over time, the whole yard starts to feel more natural, balanced, and easy to live with.

Memorial Day weekend always feels like the official kickoff to outdoor living season around here ☀️

Morning coffee outside.
Kids playing in the yard.
Friends around the firepit.
Late Texas sunsets on the patio.

These are the kinds of spaces we love helping people create, spaces that actually get used and enjoyed.

We hope everyone has a safe, relaxing weekend enjoying some time outside 💙

And if your yard still feels more stressful than enjoyable… we’d love to help change that.

A lot of landscaping problems start before the first plant ever goes into the ground.

Wrong placement.
Too much crowding.
Plants that look good at install… but struggle a year later.

At BrightStar, we think long-term from the beginning —
how things will grow, handle heat, fill in over time, and function season after season.

Because a great yard shouldn’t peak on install day.

It should keep getting better.

That’s why we design with real life in mind.

Kids playing.

Hosting friends.

Low-maintenance weekends.

but a space that actually fits how you live.

This is the Peggy Martin rose, and it’s one we recommend to clients all the time.

Partly because it’s beautiful…

but mostly because it’s *tough in a way most plants just aren’t.*

After Hurricane Katrina, when entire neighborhoods were underwater…

this rose was one of the only plants found still thriving.

No irrigation.

No maintenance.

Completely flooded... and it *survived.*

And honestly… that tells you everything you need to know.

Because when we’re choosing plants for a yard, we’re not just thinking about how it looks on install day.

We’re thinking about how it’s going to hold up over time.

Heat. Weather swings. Real life.

This one checks all the boxes:

✅ Fast-growing

✅ Climbs beautifully over fences, arbors, etc.

✅ Low maintenance once established

✅ And clearly… incredibly resilient

It’s the kind of plant that brings both personality *and* practicality to a space.

And for some of us, it’s also just a really cool piece of Southern history to have in your yard.

If you’ve been thinking about adding something like this, we can absolutely design around it.

And we hope you do!

Good landscaping isn’t just about choosing plants that look nice.

It’s about building a space where everything works *together.*

The plants.

The drainage.

The stonework.

The water flow.

The maintenance over time.

That’s what creates a yard that not only looks beautiful—

but actually functions well season after season.

And in Texas, that matters.

Because the best outdoor spaces aren’t the ones you constantly have to fight to maintain…

they’re the ones designed to work *with* the environment from the beginning. 🌿💙

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your outdoor space, now’s a great time to start planning before summer schedules fill up.

Everyone focuses on the grass.

We focus on what’s underneath it.

💙

Most people think a great lawn comes down to one thing:

Choosing the right grass, and laying it properly.

And yes… that *does* matter.

But what really makes the difference?

Everything that happens *before* that.

→ Proper grading (so water drains the way it should)

→ Soil prep (so roots can actually establish)

→ Timing (because Texas weather is… unpredictable at best)

That’s what determines whether your lawn just “looks good” for a few weeks…

or actually *takes*, fills in, and thrives.

The kind that comes in full and green, and keeps growing stronger over time.

The kind that can handle heat, weather swings, and real-life use in Texas.

At BrightStar, we don’t just lay sod.

We build the foundation that makes it last.

What does “actually works” mean?

It means your yard isn’t fighting you all the time.

It drains properly after a storm.

The plants hold up in the heat.

You’re not constantly trimming, replacing, or fixing things.

And most importantly—

it fits how you *live* in the space.

Whether that’s low-maintenance, hosting, or just wanting something that looks good without a ton of effort…

that’s what we design for.

Spring and Summer projects are filling up 🌿

Plants like the ones you see here are chosen to thrive in our climate—

which means:

✔ Less water

✔ Better heat tolerance

✔ More resilience through the seasons

They also tend to support pollinators and local ecosystems in a way that non-adapted plants don’t.

But beyond that…

they just *work*.

When a landscape is built around plants that actually belong here, everything becomes easier to maintain—and more consistent over time.
