The safe cutting window for Oaks in Northern Illinois closes this week, as the risk of oak wilt fungal spore travel increases with every warm moment. Cut responsibly and do not help this fungus kill more of our best trees. Optional pruning projects should be postponed until average weekly temps drop below 55°.
Emergency situations which require broken or fallen oak limbs or trees to be removed should include immediate wound sealing and saw purging. Don't carry these spores in your equipment.

Current Oak Wilt Risk: 🟡 YELLOW (Transitional / Rising Fast)
What that means right now
You are no longer in “clean safe winter conditions”
But not fully in peak beetle flight yet
You’re in the early emergence window where risk can spike quickly with warm days.

50' hackberry split from crown to root, open, swaying and treacherous. (Watch 2 short videos for drop and movement in comments) No equipment back yard access. This was either a crane removal, or some extremely good reinforcement and careful rigging. We pulled it together with multiple ropes and straps, cleared a drop zone and sent it! Great result. Can Hackberry hell week end now? LOL

Chunking out a very old hackberry! Shreds of a raccoon's condo bedding flying as I cut. Good times!

68' Catalpa removal inside a fenced in back yard. 15° back lean with all the branch structure on the back side over power lines, buildings and vehicles. 3/4 steel cable and a dozer along with (2) 10k breaking strength ropes to to our truck out on the street. Experienced pullers and a long-sloped Humboldt notch cut high to keep this in the limited space, carefully placed this disaster of a tree exactly on target. Took me back to my USFS logging days decades ago. Nice work, fellas!
