TACC is pleased to announce their Spring/Summer Fundraiser “Five Hundred Dollar Fridays.” Every Friday in July, TACC will give away $500.00. For a $20.00 donation you will receive a ticket for a chance to win. “Five Hundred Dollar Fridays” tickets are available now at the TACC office throughout the months of May and June as well as from TACC Board Members, Ambassadors, and Volunteers.

Only 300 tickets are available. Stop by to make your donation and get a ticket for a chance to win before they are gone. Drawing dates are as follows: July 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, & 31st, 2026. All money will be given in the form of a TACC check. Each ticket will have a coordinating number. Tickets will be hand drawn at random every Friday in July. We try a lot of different trimmer lines to see which ones best suit us. We have our preferred brands and uses for each, for sure. But all of them are the thicker lines, and all are twisted. These pointers do make a difference. Don't go cheap. Save the headache. We have also found that spending a little more gets you a stronger line, so it lasts a little longer.

Does the brand of trimmer line actually matter?

​Here’s the real answer most people won't tell you: It’s NOT about the logo on the spool—it’s about the science of the setup.

​Stop blaming the trimmer. If you’re constantly stopping to tap the head or re-string, it’s because you’re running the wrong specs.

​ The Three Pillars of Performance:
​Thickness is King: For pros, .095 is the "sweet spot" for residential, but .105 is where the money is made on overgrown lots.

​Shape > Brand: Round line "tears" the grass; Twisted or Square line acts like a saw. It cuts cleaner and reduces vibration on your hands.
​The "Pro" Factor: Cheap line isn't just annoying; it "welds" (melts together) inside the head because it can't handle the heat of a commercial gearbox.

Here's a good reason to mow with a higher deck, and only take 1/3 of the blade off. While getting mowers ready for the season (we sacrifice our yard sometimes to make sure everything is in good order) and make sure everything is ready to go, someone mistook the deck height. Somehow, the 3 1/2" cut that we normally test at switched to 2 1/2". The grass in this area of the yard was around 5-6", perfect to be cut at 3 1/2. This is also a bumpy area in the yard. So the yellow spots are actually the part of the grass that is just coming out of the ground, we got lucky that we didn't scalp the ground. The grass was also being torn off the blade, so these few rows will likely be a little stressed now. Higher cuts showed our normal expectations for a nice clean cut.

Yea, pretty unsightly. Don't worry, this is OUR yard, and the winter willys have worked themselves out. We are ready, and the mower deck is back to it's proper place. You can even see the height difference in successive rows if you look closely.

Mow at a higher deck height. Our cool season grasses THRIVE above 3". Also, don't mow right before a frost. Like I said, we sacrifice our yard to make sure our customers get the BEST we can give!

With all this wonderful weather, the grass is coming in nice! We've been cruising around checking on properties we mow to keep track of grass growth. The equipment is all ready to go, and we will be pulling the trailer out this weekend, we are figuring we will have some properties ready to mow this week. The grass in our own yard is on average 4.5", with some spots over 6" and a few spots just starting to really wake up (we get it, we need our coffee in the morning, too!).

What are we looking for before scheduling that first spring mowing? Weather, grass conditions, and grass height. All three need to be working together to give your lawn the best start to the season. For weather, we want to see consistent temperatures above freezing, day and night. Frost and freezing can damage new growth significantly. We also want to avoid rain if possible, as wet grass is more difficult to cut, often resulting in ripped blades rather than a nice clean cut, despite sharp blades. Grass conditions we are looking for is consistent growth, a nice dark green color (dark for the variety grass) and a nice, thick blade and coverage. Grass growth we like to let the grass grow and become nicely established, usually doing the first cut when the yards average height is around 5". And we look at the yard individually! While we use our yard as a basis, we are checking each of the properties we mow to determine the right time for that yard.

It is amazing how in a small area the grass acts so different in our yard. The areas we are seeing more growth are well fertilized and watered (thank you septic!) and warmer as it is in full sun all day. Areas with slower growth are areas we regularly compact, both with foot and vehicle use, with the slowest growth occurring in areas that are both compact and have shade. Everywhere else is just doing it's thing and getting green.

We aren't complaining about the rain! A good spring rain helps to really get the flowers and grass off to a great start! We are gearing up and getting ready. Spring clean ups will soon be scheduled, and then it is onto mowing!
