Happy Labor Day! 🇺🇸

If you’ve been on the fence about aeration and overseeding this fall, here’s the most important thing to know:

Fall is the best window we get all year to establish new grass.

Most lawns in our area are made up of cool-season grasses like turf-type tall fescue. They thrive when the soil is still warm, the air begins to cool, and w**d pressure starts to ease. Those conditions give new seed the opportunity to germinate, develop roots, and become established before winter.

Spring seeding can work, but it’s much less forgiving. Spring seedlings are still young and shallow-rooted when summer heat, drought stress, and disease pressure arrive.

That’s why waiting until next spring isn’t quite the same as waiting a few months. You’re giving up the best growing window of the year.

Our aeration and overseeding season runs through approximately October 15, and the earlier we can get seed established, the better.

If your lawn is thin, struggling, or simply needs a refresh, now is the time.

Current Acres of Green clients: give us a call at 513-828-6100 and we’ll get you worked into the fall schedule.

🌱 A healthier lawn starts with stronger roots.

We have some summer heat headed our way, so here’s a friendly reminder for anyone with newly planted grass seed:

Keep the seedbed consistently damp throughout germination. New seed has very shallow roots and can dry out quickly—especially during hot, sunny, or windy conditions.

Use light, frequent watering to maintain moisture without creating puddles or washing the seed away. Check it several times throughout the day and adjust your watering as needed.

The simplest rule to remember:

When it dries, it dies.

A little extra attention now will make a meaningful difference in building a thicker, healthier lawn this fall. 🌱

Why September Beats April

Many people think spring is the best time to fix a lawn.

It isn't.

Spring is when w**ds are trying to take over.

Fall is when grass has the advantage.

Warm soil.
Cool nights.
Less w**d pressure.

Nature does most of the work for us.

That's why nearly every turfgrass expert recommends late summer and early fall for establishing new grass.

Work with nature...

and you'll spend less money fighting it later.

Every year someone calls me in mid-October and says... "I wish I had done this a month ago." I completely understand. Life gets busy. But Mother Nature doesn't move the calendar for us. The sweet spot for aeration and overseeding is surprisingly short. Once soil temperatures begin dropping too far, young grass simply doesn't have enough time to mature before winter. If improving your lawn is on your list this year... Don't wait until the leaves are falling. The best time comes sooner than most people realize. Get more info or secure your spot before it's too late.

BUILD YOUR BRIDGE TO SEPTEMBER 30

A summer-stressed lawn does not have to look perfect right now.

It needs to remain alive enough to recover.

Between now and September 30, focus on protecting the crowns and roots of the grass you already have:

• Maintain a 4-inch mowing height
• Skip mowing when the lawn isn’t growing
• Water deeply using cycle-and-soak irrigation
• Reduce traffic on stressed areas
• Avoid heavy summer fertilization
• Delay aggressive w**d control when conditions are unsafe
• Watch sunny slopes, driveway edges and shallow-soil areas closely

Begin identifying the areas that may need fall attention:

• Thin or bare sections
• Compacted clay soil
• Areas damaged by heat or drought
• Hillsides where water runs off
• Places where grass has repeatedly struggled
• Sections with heavy w**d pressure

Don’t rush to seed during extreme summer heat. Young grass has tiny roots and very little ability to survive repeated 90-degree days.

Instead, prepare for the cooler late-summer and early-fall recovery window. For many Cincinnati lawns, mid-August through September 30 is the most valuable period for aeration, overseeding and repairing summer damage.

You do not have to win summer.

You need to get your lawn through summer with enough healthy roots to make a strong comeback this fall.

That is the plan.

DON’T FORCE A SUMMER GREEN-UP

When a lawn begins turning pale or brown, the natural reaction is to throw fertilizer, w**d killer or another “quick fix” at it.

During prolonged heat, that can make matters worse.

Cool-season grass naturally slows down when temperatures climb into the 90s. It is trying to conserve moisture and energy—not produce a flush of new top growth.

Avoid applying heavy amounts of fast-release nitrogen simply to make a stressed lawn greener. Pushing tender growth during extreme heat can increase the plant’s demand for water when its roots are least capable of supplying it.

Be equally careful with do-it-yourself w**d control.

Many herbicides become more likely to injure desirable grass when temperatures are high, the lawn is drought-stressed or nighttime temperatures remain elevated.

A few summer w**ds are frustrating.

Damaging the grass while trying to kill them is worse.

Our summer objective is controlled support—not forced growth:

• Protect the roots
• Maintain adequate soil moisture
• Reduce unnecessary stress
• Treat only when conditions and product directions allow
• Save aggressive correction work for cooler weather

Sometimes the smartest summer lawn-care decision is knowing what not to do.

If your lawn is struggling this summer... It isn't asking for more fertilizer. It's asking for a fresh start.

Months of summer heat, foot traffic, clay soil, mowing, and drought slowly squeeze the oxygen out of the soil.

Grass roots stop growing.
Water runs off instead of soaking in.
Weeds move into the empty spaces.

That's exactly why late mid-August through September is my favorite time of the year.

We open the soil with core aeration.
We introduce thousands of premium grass seeds.
Then we give those young plants the best chance possible to establish before winter.

By next spring, you're not just looking at greener grass.

You're looking at a lawn that's stronger from the ground up.

Sometimes the best lawns aren't created by doing more.

They're created by doing the right thing... at the right time.

GIVE YOUR STRESSED LAWN SOME SPACE

A heat-stressed lawn is already fighting to survive.

Every trip across it adds pressure.

During prolonged temperatures in the 90s, reduce unnecessary traffic from:

• Repeated mowing
• Heavy lawn equipment
• Delivery carts and contractor equipment
• Children’s activities in the same concentrated area
• Dogs repeatedly following the same path
• Vehicles turning or parking on the lawn

Grass under severe drought stress becomes less flexible. Footprints or mower tracks that remain visible after you walk across the lawn are warning signs that the plant is running low on moisture.

This is especially important on hillsides and areas with thin or compacted Cincinnati clay soil. These locations often have fewer healthy roots and less available moisture to begin with.

Move activities around when possible. Avoid sharp mower turns. Don’t mow during the hottest part of the day, and don’t repeatedly drive heavy equipment over the same stressed areas.

Your lawn doesn’t need to be pushed through summer. It needs to be protected through summer.

Every little stress you remove now can mean less grass to replace this fall.
