🇺🇸 Happy Memorial Day 🇺🇸
🌺Why do we wear poppies?
The red poppy became an enduring symbol of Memorial Day after World War I, when Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae saw bright-red poppies blooming on the war-torn fields where so many soldiers had lost their lives. The sight moved him to write the famous poem “In Flanders Fields.”
Two women in different countries saw the poem and were inspired in different ways. Moïna Michael wrote a poem in 1918 in response to McCrae’s, titled “We Shall Keep Faith.” She also started making and selling red poppies to raise money for veterans. Meanwhile, Anna Guérin of France organized large poppy drives, making and selling poppies to raise money for widows, orphans and veterans, and to fund France’s post-war restoration efforts.
Since then, the red poppy has become a timeless symbol of remembrance, resilience, and hope. And here's the part that stays with us - the Flanders poppy is actually classified as a w**d! A quiet, resilient burst of beauty rising from unimaginable loss.
At WOW Windowboxes, we believe flowers carry meaning far beyond beauty - and today we're reminded of that more than ever.
