Before & After Water Heater Correction — Safety Done Right

This job started with a water heater installed in a tight closet space that was not installed safely or correctly. The original installation had multiple serious issues — the vent hood was improperly crushed down onto the unit, and poly water piping was in direct contact with the flue pipe, creating a dangerous heat exposure condition.

This type of installation can lead to pipe damage, ventilation failure, and potential safety hazards if left uncorrected.

In the “after” photo, everything was rebuilt the right way. The vent system is now properly aligned and secured to ensure safe and correct exhaust flow. All water piping was corrected and repositioned to maintain proper clearance, including required separation from the flue. Even in a very tight closet space, the installation was brought up to safe, proper standards without cutting corners.

Most homeowners never think about their thermal expansion tank — until it fails.

This small tank is an important safety device in most cases connected to your water heater. Its job is to absorb extra pressure created when water heats up and expands inside your plumbing system. Without it working properly, that pressure can stress pipes, fixtures, shut-off valves, and even your water heater itself.

The expansion tank in this photo has completely failed and filled with water, causing it to become extremely heavy and begin pulling down on the plumbing pipes. Left unchecked, this can lead to leaks, pipe damage, or even a major plumbing failure.

A properly working expansion tank should have an air charge inside it. One simple way to check it is by lightly tapping on the tank:
• The top should usually sound hollow
• The bottom may sound more solid
• If the entire tank sounds solid or feels extremely heavy, it may be waterlogged and failing

You can also check the air pressure with a tire gauge when the system is depressurized. Most residential systems are typically set around the home’s water pressure.

Expansion tanks are small but play a big role in protecting your plumbing system and water heater. If yours is leaking, rusting, sagging, or more than a few years old, it may be time to have it inspected.

Quick plumbing PSA every homeowner should know:

Do you know where your home’s main water shut off valve is?

If a pipe bursts, a water heater fails, or a supply line lets go, knowing where that valve is—and being able to shut it off quickly—can save you thousands in water damage.

I’ve seen small leaks turn into major repairs simply because no one knew how to stop the water fast enough.

Also pictured is your PRV (pressure reducing valve).

Its job is to control the water pressure coming into your home from the city supply. Too much pressure can wear out faucets, toilets, water heaters, appliances, and pipes faster than they should.

Signs your PRV may be failing:

High water pressure

Pressure that changes throughout the day

What does a UV water filtration system actually do?

A lot of homeowners focus on taste, smell, or hard water buildup—but many don’t think about what you can’t see.

Is Your Water pH Where It Should Be?

Most homeowners never think about it—but the pH level of your water plays a big role in how your plumbing performs and how your water feels.

The good news?
You can check it yourself with a simple pool test kit from any hardware store.

What pH Means:

Low pH (acidic water)
High pH (alkaline water)
Ideal range for home water: ~6.5 – 8.5

Problems with LOW pH (Acidic Water):

Corrosion of pipes and fixtures
Blue/green staining in sinks and tubs
Metallic taste
Pinhole leaks over time

Problems with HIGH pH (Alkaline Water):

Just replaced this worn-out Moen shower cartridge for a customer dealing with a constant drip.

Over time, shower cartridges wear down from daily use, mineral buildup, and normal aging. When that happens, water can’t fully shut off—leading to that annoying (and wasteful) drip.

Common causes:
• Worn-out cartridge seals
• Mineral buildup inside the valve
• High water pressure putting extra strain on parts

👉 Many people don’t realize—if your home’s water pressure is above 80 PSI, it can shorten the life of cartridges and other plumbing fixtures.
