Want That Fixed? LLC

Want That Fixed? LLC A remodeling contractor focused on keeping the character in character homes.

I have 15 years professional experience after being raised in a family of carpenters. I believe that even the smallest repair should be done properly and that all projects begin with a conversation.

Now I’m Ok with the samples. I would say “Full-speed ahead!” but it’s a lot of hand sanding to complete. 😖

Measure twice, cut once.
Stain different combinations of grit, methods, maybe some conditioner, dig out the teeny spray gun because wiping it on absolutely isn’t working, etc. Glad it was under a dozen attempts.
End grain is tough.

Another really interesting custom project. This pair of solid maple faux columns wrap the wall that previously had no trim- and not much character. These columns anchor the arch and frame both rooms when you look across. Or even down! A lot to take in to consideration and pare down to just enough.

I installed this door and trim yesterday (same house as the white doors I just shared.) But its days are numbered.

But this isn’t a post about laminate failure and how it was manufactured. It’s about the value of small business and relationships.

I sent close-up photos of the multiple problem areas to my rep’s email. Not to to CustomerService@ but to a person. My phone rang within 10 minutes. First words I heard “So you need a new door.”

And that’s why valley_planing_mill is at the top of my list of most valued partners. We share the same value in quality and craftsmanship and delivering for the client.

And it’s just another example of the value of small business. No phone tree hell, no “What phone number was it ordered under?” A quick, clear response to make it right.

I could go on longer (most of you know that) but I’ll say that in this season of gratitude and reflection, be thankful for those who help you put your best foot forward

A little follow-up from last week. The custom closet door fitted into its new home. After more fitting to make the door match the angle this 100+ year old house had settled on.

Here are a pair of doors that went to their new home this week. Two of four for this project. Two of the four-panel doors on the left are replacing flat slab dark oak veneer doors that match nothing in the 100 year-old house. The short door on the right is for a bedroom closet. It showed up to the Shop as a flat slab the same height as the four-panel. So I did what I do, cut it to size, added the moulding, and painted. A great suggestion from my partners Valley Planing Mill. And far, far less expensive. Keeping the Character in Character Homes doesn’t mean making everything identical, but keeping an aesthetic.

In Situ trim finishing. I rarely do it, pre finishing is far more efficient (and economical) but that wasn’t offered by this very big outfit. Photographing windows from the inside is notoriously difficult due to the backlighting, but here’s what I could get. I was asked to come in after the winder were replaced and the trim was installed. My local sherwinwilliams gave me a perfect stain match. Even more impressive since there are 2 different species of wood involved. Then I had to mix some putty to match and fill the gaps and holes. Clear coated with the Gallery series waterborne finish.

Keeping the Character in Character Homes

I am a remodeling contractor serving the greater Fox Valley with over 17 years professional experience. I understand that every house has a character and that the best characters endure. But that does not mean that a vintage home must forgo modern amenities. Nor does it mean that a contemporary home should be trapped by a one-size-fits-most aesthetic. I bring a craftsman ethos and sensibility to each of my projects with careful attention to detail and the patience to manage the unique, often unforeseen, charms of each house.

I was raised in a 100 year-old house by a family of carpenters. I was building my own toys as early as I can remember and began building houses in elementary school. I’ve spent a life acquiring the skills and patience to execute every phase of the project. Want That Fixed is a one-man shop. You will deal with me and my trusted stable of tradesmen and suppliers. I understand that a budget is always a factor, often the key limit, but strive to bring value to your project.
