🌿 My First Philodendron Pollination! 🌿

I finally attempted my very first Philodendron cross! I used pollen collected from our Philodendron mayoi to pollinate our Philodendron squamiferum flower—so now we wait and hope that it takes! 🤞🌱

If everything works, we could have some Philodendron squamiferum × mayoi babies in the future, and I can’t wait to see what traits they might inherit from each parent!

I also have two more mayoi flowers open tonight, so I’ll be collecting fresh pollen from them tomorrow to save for future crosses. I’m still really hopeful that our Red Congo will give me a viable flower soon. The first one was kind of a flop, but there’s already another on the way—so it’s only a matter of time! ❤️🌿

This is such an exciting new plant adventure for PlantAholx! Everyone send some good pollination vibes our way! ✨

The world has lost a true legend, but heaven has gained one of its brightest angels.

Dolly Parton was so much more than an unforgettable voice and a country music icon. She was a storyteller, a dreamer, a trailblazer, and a beautiful example of kindness, generosity, faith, and staying true to yourself.

🌿 MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE POSTS 🌿

Hello, all my planty friends! My name is Devon Page, and I’m the man behind the posts—and the creator of PlantAholx! I thought it was finally time to introduce myself and share a little about how this plant-filled adventure began.

PlantAholx started with one single houseplant—which we still have today! It began as an Alocasia Stingray corm that was given to us around the spring of 2022. My roommate asked me if I could get it growing, and although I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, I gave it my best shot!
That one little corm sparked something in us. We began learning everything we could about plants, and over the next few years, our collection—and our knowledge—continued to grow. We learned how to care for plants, propagate them, and share them with others. By 2025, we decided PlantAholx would be the perfect way to turn our newfound passion into something more!

My hope is to eventually make PlantAholx my full-time job if my current career ever comes to an end—although I’m certainly hoping that doesn’t happen anytime soon! More on that in a moment.

☕ A LITTLE ABOUT ME

I’m 37 years old and live with my partner of seven years and our roommate. We also have two tiny, feathered family members—our parakeets, Sweetpea and Petrie.

When I’m not surrounded by plants, I enjoy cooking, gardening, canning, propagating, drinking coffee, and enjoying life on our little slice of heaven. Music has always been a huge part of my life, whether I’m playing, listening, or singing. I’m also a big fan of DCI—definitely a band nerd at heart! 🎶

I was born and raised in Missouri and graduated from Webb City High School in 2007. After graduation, I moved with my parents to Pittsburg, Kansas. In 2013, I moved to Jodie, West Virginia, and then relocated to Charleston in 2016. It’s hard to believe I’ve now called this area home for ten years!

Over the years, I’ve worn many hats and worked a little bit of everywhere:
🍹 Bartender
🍽️ Waiter
☎️ Telephone sales representative
📋 Telephone survey representative
🧪 Assistant to a pharmaceutical professor
🍔 Fast-food worker
📚 Continuing education class host
🧹 Janitor at the Charleston Coliseum
📬 Mail clerk for the West Virginia State Tax Department

And now, I’ve found another passion: working as an assistant racing greyhound trainer! 🐾

I began working at the Lester Raines kennel two years ago, and I’ve completely fallen in love with these sweet dogs. The schedule can take a lot out of me. I normally work five days a week from approximately 6:00–10:00 a.m., 1:30 or 2:00–4:00 p.m.—sometimes longer on schooling days—and then again from 6:00–7:20 p.m. Even with those long, split days, I wouldn’t trade the experience for the world.

Working with these amazing dogs has taught me so much. One of the biggest lessons has been seeing firsthand how different my daily experience is from the picture of greyhound racing that is often presented to the public. The dogs in my care are spoiled from the moment they arrive at the track until the day they retire and head off to become professional couch potatoes!

One of the hardest parts of my job is saying goodbye when a racer retires. You know they’re moving on to a comfortable new life, but each one takes up a huge place in your heart. Seeing them happy and loved in their adoptive homes makes letting go a little easier.

When we take the day’s sprint list from the board and begin loading the truck, the entire kennel comes alive because the dogs know exactly what’s happening!

Most of our racers retire at around four years old. When they show us they’re ready to be finished, we don’t force them to continue. They’re adopted into loving homes where they can spend the rest of their lives relaxing on a couch and being spoiled more.

We tell every one of our racers, “We don’t care what you run, as long as you come home safely.” And we truly mean it. Their safety matters far more to us than anything written on a points sheet.

Vanilla crème cookies, oatmeal crème pies, and banana crème pies are some of their absolute favorite treats! You should see Claude get excited over a cookie—it’s one of the cutest things ever! Our trainer always says, “I wish I got as happy as he does over a cookie!” 😂

I love my job, I love this area, and I’m loving the opportunity to bring all of you some of the best plants West Virginia has to offer! 🪴

Thank you to everyone who has made the past eight months so memorable and such an absolute blast. I look forward to seeing all of you during our monthly live shows. I also love meeting everyone who picks up their orders and seeing the happiness that these plants bring into your lives.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know the man behind PlantAholx. Here’s to many more months—and hopefully many more years—of plants, friendships, laughter, learning, and growing together! 💚🌱

🌿 Watching a Nepenthes Miranda Pitcher Come to Life! 🌿

One of the coolest things about growing carnivorous plants is getting to watch a brand-new pitcher develop—and this Nepenthes Miranda definitely put on a show! 😍

These pictures capture the pitcher as it went from a tightly closed trap to the HUGE, fully opened beauty it is now. 🪴❤️

As a Nepenthes pitcher matures, it first inflates while the lid stays sealed tightly over the opening. Then comes the fun part… the lid begins to lift, the mouth starts opening, and that gorgeous peristome (the rim around the opening) begins to unfurl and show off its color. Over time, the pitcher continues to harden, deepen in color, and become fully functional.

And would you LOOK at the size of this one?! 👀

My hand for scale in that last picture says it all! 😂
I absolutely love the colors on Miranda—the greenish-gold pitcher covered in those deep red speckles, paired with that rich red striped lip. And don't forget those little wings and hairs running down the front! 😍

Once fully opened, the pitcher begins producing nectar around its rim to attract insects. Those unlucky visitors can slip down into the pitcher, where the plant's digestive fluid gets to work. 🌱🪰

It still blows my mind that something this beautiful is basically a GIANT BUG TRAP. 😂😂

Watching each stage happen is half the fun of growing Nepenthes. Now the question is…

How BIG will the next pitcher be?! 👀

Who else could stare at Nepenthes pitchers all day?! 🙋‍♂️

🌿✨ HEY! LOOK AT THIS LOOK! ✨🌿

Okayyyy… remember the “HELP! What have I done?!” moment when the PlantAholx Studio looked like a plant tornado had just ripped through it?! 😂🪴

Well… LOOK AT IT NOW! 👀🙌

We completely rearranged the studio, moved what felt like EVERY. SINGLE. PLANT. 😅, changed up the setup, and somehow managed to put it all back together without getting permanently lost in the jungle. 😂🌿

🎥 Check out the BEFORE & AFTER in the video!
Sometimes you just need to tear everything apart, question every decision you've ever made halfway through 🤣, and then stand back when it's finished like…

“HEY! LOOK AT THIS LOOK!” 😎🌱

And YESSSS… this big studio makeover means we're getting things ready for our next PlantAholx Live Show! 👀🔥

The break is almost over, the studio has a whole new look, and we're getting ready to bring in the NEW INVENTORY! 🪴🌿💚

Now the important question…
👇 Do you like the BEFORE or AFTER setup better?! 👇

🚨🪴 HELP! WHAT HAVE I DONE?! 🪴🚨

😂😂 Just kidding… THE PlantAholx STUDIO IS GETTING A MAKEOVER!

Currently in that wonderful stage where everything has been moved, plants are EVERYWHERE, cords have multiplied on their own, and I'm starting to question exactly how many plants we actually own. 🤣🌿

But there is a method to the madness! 👀
We’re completely rearranging the studio and making some HUGE changes for the next live show! 🎥🪴🔥

Right now it looks a little like a greenhouse and a tornado had a baby… 😂 but just wait until you see the finished setup!

BIG changes are coming to PlantAholx! 👀🌱

Now excuse me while I figure out where the heck everything is supposed to go. 😂😂

Who else starts a “quick rearrange” and suddenly the ENTIRE ROOM is torn apart?! 🙋‍♂️🤣
