The difference here is basically what happens once the sun goes down. During the day, you notice the layout, clean pool lines, raised spa, cantilever pergola, turf details, and the way the whole backyard is put together. At night, the fire features and pool lighting take over and the space feels completely different.

That’s why we think about lighting and fire features while we’re designing the pool, not as extras at the end. In an Arizona backyard, you’re probably using the space just as much after sunset as you are during the day, so it should look good both ways.

One of the nicer parts of modern pool automation is not having to walk outside and flip switches every time you want to use a feature. We can set up water features, lighting, and compatible fire features so they can be controlled right from your phone.

You can also build schedules around how you actually use the backyard. If you like hearing the water first thing in the morning, we can have it come on automatically, shut off during the hotter part of the day, then come back on again at night. It sounds like a small detail, but it makes the backyard feel a lot more usable without constantly thinking about it.

A lot of people see a larger custom pool like this and assume it's going to take dramatically longer to build. The reality is that while a project like this includes more plumbing, rebar, and structural work, the early construction stages move at a very similar pace to a standard pool.

This 170 perimeter pool features a custom spa, floating pads, and floating travertine lounge areas that will become standout features once everything is complete. At this stage, excavation, plumbing, steel, and electrical are already in place, and it has only been about two weeks since construction began.

An outdoor kitchen works best when it feels like an actual extension of the house. Here we combined a built-in grill, pizza oven, bar seating, TV, lighting, and a covered structure so the space can handle cooking, eating, and hanging out without everyone constantly going back inside.

We also like keeping the cooking zone close to the seating instead of pushing it off into a corner. It makes the whole backyard feel more connected, especially when you’re already designing around a custom pool, fire pit, or outdoor living area. A backyard gets a lot more useful when everything has its own purpose. Here we have a custom pool, raised spa, tanning ledge, fire feature, pergola, basketball court, turf, and multiple seating areas without the space feeling packed.

That usually comes down to layout more than square footage. We think about how people move between the house, pool, spa, court, and seating areas before deciding where anything goes. Choosing the right waterline tile is one of the biggest design decisions in a pool remodel. It helps define the overall style of the pool and can completely change the finished look. In this project, we're installing new waterline tile along with a custom decorative tile feature that's being cut and fitted on site for a precise finish.

One of the best parts of the process is visiting the showroom together to compare different tile styles, colors, and finishes in person. Seeing the materials up close makes it much easier to choose something that complements your pool and the rest of your backyard.

Buying a home with an existing pool doesn't mean you're stuck with the way it looks. In many cases, a remodel can completely update the space with new finishes, tile, lighting, and modern features while costing much less than building a new pool.

For this project, our process helped the homeowner save about $7,000 on their pool remodel. If you're happy with the overall shape of the pool, remodeling is often the most cost-effective way to give it a fresh, updated look. If you're looking for something completely different, reshaping the pool is also an option, although it typically involves a larger investment.

Fire and water features completely change how a pool feels once the sun starts going down. Here we used raised fire bowls with water spilling into the pool, patterned tile, and landscape lighting to create a focal point that works from pretty much every angle.

We like combining fire and water because they do two different jobs. The water adds movement and sound during the day, while the fire becomes the main visual at night. In an Arizona backyard, that gives the pool a lot more personality without needing to make the entire design complicated.
