Casting 481988 covers the 1970 to 1974 400 and the 1978 to 1979 W72, with thick main bearing bulkheads that take stress well. Casting 500557 ran on base 400 engines from 1975 through 1977 with thinned webbing to save weight. Same displacement, same external dimensions, and the difference is in the webbing you can't see from the outside.

The 1973 GTO took a major magazine's Car of the Year award, and the coverage leaned heavily on the Super Duty 455. That engine reached one press car and no retail customer in that model. The Super Duty was certified and built in very small numbers for the Firebird line, and the GTO application existed to be driven by people writing about it. The award therefore sits on a specification built a single time, for the press, in a year when the retail GTO was a Le Mans with a badge package. It is a clean illustration of why contemporary road tests are a poor guide to what a buyer actually received.

Every Pontiac V8 cylinder head from 1959 onward shares the same bolt pattern and the same port layout, so they physically interchange across the whole family. A 389 head bolts to a 455. A 400 head bolts to a 350. Nothing about the block cares. The head is the easy part to bolt on. Getting the rest of the engine to use it is where the real work is. save for the next cars and coffee.

The 1978 Redbird was an Esprit appearance package with a red exterior and interior and gold accents. Pontiac built 3,140 of them, and they replaced the Skybird partway through the model year.

The 428 ran from 1967 to 1969 on a 4.12 inch bore and a 4.00 inch stroke, and it never went into a GTO. It was a full size Pontiac engine, fitted to the Bonneville, the Grand Prix and the 2+2. The engine everybody associates with Pontiac performance was sold to people buying a big comfortable car. share and follow for more.

Only 2,000 of the 1981 Daytona 500 Pace Car edition were built, every
single one an automatic. What makes this car matter most for us: it
carried Recaro-designed bucket seats with red inserts, and they were the only reclining seats ever offered in a second generation Trans Am. Pontiac never brought the feature back.

Trans Am trivia: why did automotive journalists rip apart the standard 1969 Trans Am the moment it hit showrooms? A) It only came with a 3 speed automatic B) Its own 400 V8 broke the 5.0 liter SCCA racing limit its name came from C) It had no headlights or seatbelts D) It cost more than a Ferrari 250 GTO. Chamber volume is the lever. Bolt a smaller chamber head onto a bigger engine and static compression goes up, because the same charge is being squeezed into less space. Roughly ten cubic centimetres of chamber is worth about half a point of compression on these engines. That is why the head swap is the cheapest compression you can buy on a Pontiac.

The W50 Formula appearance package came back in 1977 with redesigned hoods and dual scoops set closer to the leading edge than in 1976. Pontiac built 21,801 Formulas that year.
