September 9-13 is Construction Su***de Prevention Week. It’s an important time for us to reflect on the mental health of our workforce, especially given the staggering statistics: the su***de rate among construction workers is 5.5 times higher than that of all other workplace fatalities and 4 times higher than that of the general population.

This data highlights the critical need to prioritize mental health just as we do with physical health on the jobsite. We want to encourage open conversations, provide support, and share resources related to mental well-being during this week and beyond.

Let’s work together to foster a supportive environment where everyone feels safe to discuss their struggles and seek help.

Job Description:
The candidate for these positions will work with other technicians to accomplish outside construction duties and activities. The focus of the position is to assist the area manager/superintendent by providing field support. The candidate should expect to spend most of their time in the field(outside) but should also expect to complete administrative tasks as required by the manager. Work schedules vary, and the candidate may be required to work extended hours and/or after regular work hours. The candidate may work up to 6-day work weeks, be required to travel, and possibly be listed on a rotating on-call schedule.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Climb ladders, and enter tunnels, buildings, vaults, trenches, attics, crawl spaces, or utility holes to place, maintain or remove wiring or equipment. Work in remote and rough terrain locations. Work outside and will be exposed to all weather conditions.
Perform additional construction work such as digging holes, pulling conduit, laying cable in the ground, unreeling, pulling, and placing fiber cable from approved connection point through the conduit to customer business or destination distribution points.
Verify and Pothole existing utilities in the work zone.
Dismantle, move, or remove underground or building wire, cable, associated equipment, and hardware as per the customer and supervisory order.
Digging trenches from the conduit to be connected to a pedestal or pole for activation.
Restore the work area to its original condition upon completion of work.
Ability and knowledge to safely operate a mini excavator.
Adheres to all company employee safety and customer rules and policies. This includes, but is not limited to, appearance codes and vehicle policies.
Wear appropriate safety equipment and follow established safety practices and procedures.
Performs all other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:
Work outside in all types of weather.
Must be able to lift, handle, and meet ladder safety requirements.
Must be able to work at heights of -10 - 15 ft.
Must be able to bend, stand, sit, crawl, climb, and lift throughout each day.
Required to frequently stand, walk, and sit. Required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch to wire cables and string wire.

Miscellaneous Skills / Considerations:
Working knowledge of utility placement practices; general knowledge of construction practices.
Knowledge of utility locators.
Able to read blueprints/underground utility plans and interpret work assignments.
Must be safety and customer focused
Must be a self-starter
Must have a valid driver's license
Must be a drug-free individual
Must be mechanically inclined.

Overview:
Laborer duties will include general labor duties related to telecommunications construction as directed by the Foreman/Supervisor.

Responsibilities:
• All phases of underground construction include but are not limited to: Loading, driving, delivery, digging, removal and placement of various types, sizes and weight of construction materials and equipment
• Hand dig using shovel, mechanical tools
• Install and maintenance of underground telecommunications cabling
• Climb into and out of equipment (trucks, cars, backhoes, trenchers, etc.)
• Operate or work around heavy equipment and machinery
• Working in congested or remote areas
• Maintain visual and audible contact with other crewmen and all moving or stationary persons/vehicles/objects to ensure safe coordination of movement
• Perform general construction work under direction of Foreman/Supervisor
• Flagging, property or worksite restoration
• Maintain safe working habits/conditions according to all regulations, procedures and policies

Qualifications:
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
• Basic knowledge of and ability to operate various types of utility trucks and equipment in a safe manner
• Basic knowledge of and ability to hand tools and equipment in a safe manner
• Ability to communicate effectively with customers, employees, etc.
• Regular and timely attendance
• A valid, unrestricted driver’s license (Commercial Driver's License is a PLUS)

Preferred Qualifications:
•Class A Commercial Driver's License
•Previous underground or telecommunication construction experience
•Ability to read prints and interpret utility maps to identify the type/size of underground utilities.

Physical Requirements:
• Duties outlined in this position will require the employee to stand, crouch, sit, bend, use hands and fingers to handle or feel as well as reaching with hands and arms to spaces both high and low. The employee will be standing, walking, climbing, balancing, crawling, crouching, lifting, holding or stooping while on shift.
• Ability to work while wearing safety boots, safety glasses and hardhat
• Ability to work in adverse weather conditions which can include but is not limited to: extreme heat and cold temperatures; inclement weather such as wind, rain, snow, sleet and dust as well as adverse driving conditions including wet roads, icy roads, and fog
• Must be able to lift/carry 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 LBS as needed with or without assistance

Compensation:
• Paid Holidays & Vacation (PTO)
