Where are you putting your attention? Where do you aim your eyes? To which sounds do you listen?

Our human nature naturally attunes towards the clangorous, appalling, outrageous, and despicable insanities of the world. And there’s plenty of it! Social media and news help us discover even more if it.

We don’t need to turn that completely off, but I’m convinced it’s wise to use the power of intention to expand our perspective to include the mild, simple, peaceful, quiet and subtle mundanities that are the majority of human interactions.

It looks (and feels) like the world is burning if you just watch the world through the lens of your electronic looking glass, but look around at the grocery store, the forest, the city hall, the playground, the restaurant and most of the rest of the world and what do you see? A whole lot of simple, peaceful existence.

When you look at real human beings, and you look deeply, what do you see? Insecure people with a sincere interest in doing what’s best for those they love. It’s universal!

Hold your gaze there at least as much as the outrageous, but ideally in proportion to the ratios of each.

This is what we could call a wholistic perspective.

Atisha's contemplations on death:

1 Death is inevitable.
2 Our life span is decreasing continuously.
3 Death will come, whether or not we are prepared for it.
4 Human life expectancy is uncertain.
5 There are many causes of death.
6 The human body is fragile and vulnerable.
7 At the time of death, our material resources are not of use to us.
8 Our loved ones cannot keep us from death.
9 Our own body cannot help us at the time of our death.

These ideas, these visions,
flood this mind.
Questions about what’s coming
for human kind.
Will we thrive
or just merely survive?
Will we unite
or continue to fight?
How shall I spend this day?
What words do I want to say?
Whose company could inspire me
to feel that deeper sense of we?
And lastly, why is it hard to be
Simple and free?

There's apparently a saying in the space industry, 'there's no problem so bad you can't make it worse'. Of course, leave it to rocket scientists to create such a genius aphorism!

Maybe there are a few ways to interpret it... I understand it as a reference to the power of . Life is full of problems. They're inevitable! We prepare the best we can, and still, 'the s**t hits the fan' (another genius saying). But, no matter how bad things get, if we have a sour attitude things will be worse! And if we have an optimystic attitude, things will be better! I'm not talking about naive 'positive thinking'. I'm talking about directing our attention toward solutions. Choosing to dance! Opening our eyes when we're scared. Opening our hearts when we're sad. Staying curious. Practicing calmness. Allowing for what is as a starting point for realizing what may become.

I heard a friend use ‘Marie Condo’ as a verb. As in, ‘last night I Marie Condoed my room’. Of course, Marie Condo is the bestselling author who taught us all to only keep the objects that ‘spark joy’. So what would it mean to ‘Marie Condo’ your life?

If you were going to trim some of the clutter out of your life, what would you trim? How much time do you want to spend on IG and FB and twitter? How much time do you want to spend ‘researching’? How much time do you want to spend watching movies and tv shows? How much time reading the news? How much time knitting, practicing music, cooking food, taking walks, conversing with friends, memorizing poetry, reading novels, gardening, dancing?

This is a perfect moment to look at how we spend our days, reflect on how we’d like to actually live them, and start establishing new rhythms and habits.

‘If you’re arguing, you’re already losing.’ Don’t know who said it first but I consider that profoundly useful wisdom. We strive for peaceful interactions not for the sake of hiding from conflict or glossing over disagreements, but with the intention to more effectively learn and grow, show and tell. Relating trumps all else!

Can we muster the patience, courage, kindness and humility it takes to actually connect with those with whom we disagree? That is love 💕

And btw, it’s easier to transcend arguing when you’re in the n**e!

So often, we intend to speak facts and truth, but what's really being expressed is attitude. We have confidence in our perspectives because they help us make sense of our dreams and ideals, traumas and tribulations, fears and frustrations, alliances and aspirations, and all the rest of our experience, not necessarily because they are clear reflections of 'reality' (if such a thing exists!).

In this age of expanding and infinite information (and 'information' includes mis/dis-information) it's not easy to keep our heads above the water, breathing easy, seeing clearly. We feel the desire to know, but ultimately there's something more buoyant about cultivating wonder.

We can consider this not only as we go about expressing ourselves, but also when we are receiving from others. We don't need to psychoanalyze each other, we can simply trust that there are complex reasons that people find the things they find, and focus upon that which they focus. Can we train our hearts to listen to the vulnerability behind the confidence, the mystery behind the certainty?

What if online was a place we went to practice being our 'higher-self'.
A time we carved out to practice thoughtful, loving interactions.
A place to participate in humanity, contributing by expressing our ideas and ideals, our presence and perspective.
A realm of aspirational kindness, witty playfulness, and soft but serious inquiries.
A zone for learning and practicing, where we allow each other the freedom to express, and honor each other with sincere listening and candid interactions.
A virtual community where we apologize, give thanks, ask for forgiveness, and say 'I love you'. ⠀

Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where are we going? ⠀
⠀
How can we feel more connected? What does freedom mean and can we achieve it? What is spirituality? Is there a purpose to life? ⠀
⠀
And then... what becomes possible if we start to harmonize our answers to these questions amongst each other?⠀
⠀
I'll be audaciously taking a stab at 'answering' these questions tomorrow in my online workshop for Global Unity Festival. Please join!⠀

As many are pointing out... ‘social distancing’ isn’t what we need right now. We’re practicing ‘physical distancing’ as a way to slow the spread of the virus, but for the sake of our health, we’ll-being, immunity and joy we must continue to socialize!

We have the option of hanging out with 10 feet between us, or we have the magical options of telecommunications.

Above is a moment from an international dance party we had with my dear mom yesterday for her birthday. So silly and fun! Please keep exploring, finding and sharing ways for us to stay connected!

One option... I’ll be hosting my weekly online yoga class tomorrow (Wednesday 4/22, 9am PST), live from . Sign up through Light and Space to join!

Hope everyone is finding some joy and opportunity in these changing times!
