🏡 Understanding Cabinet Materials & How They Affect Resurfacing
When it comes to cabinet refinishing, not all cabinets are created equal—and that’s okay! At Seale Coat Cabinets, we specialize in tailoring our process to match the material of your cabinets so you get the smoothest, longest-lasting finish possible.
Here are some of the most common cabinet materials we work with:
🔹 Solid Wood
Think oak, maple, or cherry. Wood is durable and perfect for painting or staining because it can be sanded smooth and repaired if needed. Solid wood cabinets usually refinish beautifully with a crisp, professional look.
🔹 Thermofoil (Vinyl-wrapped MDF)
These are common in newer homes. While thermofoil can’t be sanded the same way as wood, we use special bonding primers and techniques to ensure paint adheres and stays put. It’s a precise process, but the results can totally transform your space.
🔹 MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)
Often used in shaker-style doors, MDF is smooth and uniform. It soaks up paint differently than wood, so our prep work is extra important. Once sealed properly, MDF takes on a flawless finish.
🔹 Plywood Cabinets
These are sturdy and often hidden under veneer. Plywood refinishes well, especially when paired with durable primers and protective topcoats.
🔹 Laminate
Laminate is trickier since it’s basically a plastic surface. But with the right prep (de-glossing, bonding agents, and specialized coatings), we can resurface laminate cabinets to look just as sleek as wood.
✨ Why It Matters:
Understanding your cabinet material helps us choose the right prep, primer, and finish for your project. That’s why every Seale Coat estimate includes an inspection—we’re not just painting over cabinets; we’re applying a professional system designed to last.
